I have been dragging my feet on the cutting out of my top and back. F or A or something unusual. I have two idea that are out their but would like your opinions.
1) I am thinking along the lines of a body shaped like the side profile of a old wooden barrel. The side would still remain fairly traditional. This may increase intrenal volume and I will take that into consideration.
2) I am also looking at one with a shape of a old home brew jug. The little finger hole would be a good strap spot and the neck could look like it is coming out of the top.
I realize there isn't really any market potential but these are mine anyway. I haven't sold a thing, it's all for the fun. I am concerned with sound. John

It is nearly impossible to say what tone you will get from a different design until you build it. Some things to consider when designing are; internal air volume, arching shape and height, top and back thickness, and structural integrity. If I were to experiment with a new shape I would try first to build it to as close to the above standards as possible. If there are subsequent mandolins of the same design then you would be able to consider revisions to arching, graduation, internal volume, etc..

EXCELLENT! I was hoping for just such an answer. I have decided to go for the keg shape. I had kicked around a F style with a bowl back but decied that was a lofty goal with little experience. Thanks John
