View Full Version : Sorry folks ...

... things have been difficult lately.

I've been struggling with a number of crises, personal (concerning a close family member rather than affecting me personally, but that's a moot point!), financial and digital, which - as is the nature of these things, no doubt - coincided. #I've had to spend a lot of time in Ireland during November and December attending to the first of these - which didn't help the second!!

Thankfully the first two crises have - for the time being at least - improved somewhat. #On the digital front, however, things aren't looking so good although I have now got a new computer which means that I can at least "start over", but I have lost years of accumulated data.

(Story in short ... just prior to my recent extended absence and just after setting up a wireless internet link, my computer started playing up. #A friend whose background is in IT suggested that some features of Service Pack 2 may be to blame and recommended that I re-instal Service Pack 1. #However ... in order to do so, I'd have to format my hard drive. #In preparation for this I bought an external hard drive to which to back-up my data (including my email archive, recordings in progress, copies of all the Glass Slipper tracks ordered and ready for mastering) and the usual raft of useful programs. #Having reinstalled SP1, the performance problems had disappeared ... but before I could transfer the data back to the PC the external drive crashed. #As if that wasn't bad enough, problems re-emerged with the computer.)

With everything else that has been on my plate, I haven't really been able to chase this up. #However a mate (the same one who gave the advice above) has kindly taken this issue on, but had to concede defeat. #He rebuilt the computer from scratch and - apart from the fact that it's a tad spartan at present - it does seem to work OK.

However, having been in and out of Ireland dealing with others' issues, trying to deal with some of my own and neglecting some others, I'm afraid I'll need a day or two to sort my head out and get back to the business of mandolin compilations and such.

But ... I'll get back to business on that front as soon as possible. #(It will be a welcome relief!)

In the meantime Happy New Year.

Aidan

Sorry to hear about these troubles Aidan. I am glad that things appear to be getting sorted for you now however.

I hope your New Year is better than that which has passed. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Sorry to hear of your problems... computers are a blessing and a curse in a metal (or plastic) box. I hope you're out of the woods with it.

I'm looking forward to the CD, but take care of yourself and your family first!

Happy New Year,

Hope the rough patch is soon over for you, Aidan.

Technology seems to have a great knack of going haywire at the worst times. I work in IT for my sins and 'puters are just the most contrary, complicated things when they decide they want to ruin your day. The simplicity of eight strings stretched across a timber box is a lovely relief to come home to in the evenings.

I'm sure the Glass Slipper will be all the sweeter for the wait. We Irish aren't generally famous for being too hung up on deadlines anyway. I think it was Brendan Behan who was once asked, given that a similar laid back attitude seems to exist in Spain, if there was an Irish equivalent for the way the Spanish use "Mañana" to dismiss today's cares and worries to the distant reaches of tomorrow. He thought for a moment and replied "No, there is no word in the Irish language capable of conveying that level of urgency".

Tóg go bog é.

Aidan - It all sounds terrible. Sorry you're facing a hard stretch. Better times ahead, I'm confident.

Great to hear from you Aidan, and I wish you the best in rebuilding your computer as well as dealing with personal challenges in your life.
I submitted my contribution to The Glass Slipper via MP3 and would be happy to re-submit if you need me to.
Take Care and Happy New Year
