I have one of those "El Cheapo" Hamilton portable music stands. It is flimsy and also it is really not all that portable, because it doesn't come with a carrying case and even folded up, it doesn't fit in anything I would normally carry to a gig. I have seen some better alternatives online, but its hard to evaluate them by pictures on a website.
I need something that is very portable, with a carrying case, that is easy to set up and very stable once it is set up. It will have to hold a 1" three-ring binder full of music at a sitting height. I was looking to spend about $50, but if there was something that really worked well, I could flex on that. Any recommendations?

The Peterson I bought at Elderly Instruments is a very nice portable music stand. It's made of plastic and aluminum and folds down into a pretty small size, say maybe 18 x 7 x 2 (inches). I also bought the Cordura nylon carrying case for it, which has some pockets for tuners, etc. I think I paid around $35 for the stand, though it might be at $40 now. The case isn't cheap, maybe another 18 bucks, but it makes a very nice package to schlepp along -- take a look online at www.elderly.com. No affiliation to either Elderly or Peterson, btw.

Shar Products (www.sharmusic.com) has the Peterson stands with the color options of black, blue or clear. They also have some less expensive stands that look fairly sturdy but I really like the looks of the Peterson stand. I may have to indulge.

I have a couple of Ultimate stands that I like. Fold up small, and hold th einstruments well, and a little higher off the ground.

I use this (http://www.audiogear.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=KM10100B&preadd=action) K&M music stand. Amongst the traditional folding type of music stand, I've found K&M to be the most sturdy and even with heavy folders on the stand, I've never felt any danger of it collapsing. Mine came with a nylon carrying bag of sorts, although it seems peculiarly ill-fitting in shape to the folded-up music stand (the bag being triangular and the folded stand being basically tube-shaped).
Our repertoire folder is easily thicker than the 1" you mention, and works just fine: I think it would suit you. The folded stand fits into the backpack I use to carry my sheet music; it's about 40cm by 10cm by 10cm folded up.

This may be more stand then you need, but the Wenger Gig Stand holds these HEAVY books that we use (on the 4 hour gigs) and you can clip a light to it.

It folds up and down into a compact unit with a handle to carry it.
For one inch binders we use the K&M 10065 which is quite sturdy and folds up to a very small size. There's an optional carrying case so you can carry it over your shoudler. The K&M 10065 is on this page. (http://www.maplestreetguitars.com/Pages/accessoriespage6.htm)

Try Rat stands (http://www.ratstands.com/).
Ooops, i-man beat me to it. I don't have one, but if i were shopping for a new music stand, i'd try getting one of theirs, either a scherzo or a jazz (http://www.ratstands.com/jazz.html).

Interesting: I see that there is some confusion in the numbering of the K&M music stands between the site linked by Mark and that linked by me. For what it's worth, mine looks like the one I've linked, and is very sturdy; however the serial number attached to that link (10100) is wrong -- that photo is of the model #10010. The #10100 also exists, but is a much flimsier affair. For what it's worth, I paid £22 in the UK, i.e. a bit less than $40.
K&M's homepage, for definitive model numbers, is here (http://www.k-m.de/D/Katalog/index.asp?spr=EN).

Hey John, which stand did you end up with?
I had a cheap portable that I left at the Symposium, so I just ordered a Petersen.

Low cost 'on stage' orchestra stand is sturdy, steel desk would allow sheets of music to remain
in place in windy outdoor situations with a few magnets.

Wow Don, you resurrected a thread from January of last year! I stopped going to the weekly Irish session that I wanted the stand for. I didn't wind up buying anything!
