View Full Version : Maybe starting a new band
3 of us from my bluegrass band are thinking about creating a 2nd band consisting of upright bass, guitar and mando and doing more old-time material from the 20s, 30s and maybe 40s. Other than some Monroe brothers and Carter family i'm not sure where to go from here for new material. I'm not necessarily looking for stuff with mando in it.
I'm obviously missing a wealth of material but not sure where to start looking. It's easy to search for "bluegrass" music but the term "old-time" is much more vague and returns much extraneous info.
Any help greatly appreciatated...

Great... good stuff... thanks a bunch.
I'll always cheer for Woodie Guthrie. I especially like some of his dust bowl ballads.
I'd also recommend mudcat cafe. i think the address is www.mudcat.org
Thanks, Katie... I'm sorta compiling a list of artists and hadn't thought about Woodie. I'll check out mudcat... i've run across it before but has been a while.
I'm wondering also if anyone knows about listings of music charts from that era... like Billboard, et al. I'm doing some research now but haven't come up with much so far.
I do what I call "old-time/good-time" music, which includes some of the old jug band stuff, some 1930's pop songs along with folk and old-time traditional. It sounds like this is what you are thinking of doing as well. It is a lot of fun and there is a freedom in escaping strict genre restrictions.
I have compiled a songbook with 50 songs (lyrics and chords) and 2 CD's with full length versions of all 50 songs. You can contact me if you are interested at firstname.lastname@example.org. There is a page on my website that has information on the songbook, including the index of songs. I just completed the CD's and haven't got them up yet.
