March 8, 1923 (http://www.elderly.com/vintage/items/90U-3952.htm)
Nicely stated write-up. How would Mandolin Brothers have written it up?

I'd like to write it up as:
Pay to the order of Elderly's
One hundred eight thousand and 00/100s-------
But I like my house too much.

Nice set of pictures!
Look, Spruce, quartered back, bookmatched top with no runout that I can
see (he said sadly checking his bank balance).

I'll take three of them (or just this one) as long as some of you feel like donating to the Poor Mandolin Player Fund.

What do you mean it's gone?

Kinda makes that distressed Master Model look affordable. "But sweetheart, I saved $90,000!"

I wouldn't want a March '23 Loar. They really didn't get them right until the second week of July...,..after they moved production back to Nashville or some crap like that.

I understand completely.
Some of them were signed on what later became my birthday. The only reason I'm not buying that one is because I'm holding out for one of those...

it has the perfect amount of wear on it...lovingly played in but not beat.
"Honey where did you leave that dufflebag of hundreds?"

Not from Elderly of course! Imagine a ten or twenty percent on that!
Here's the Mandolin Archive Record (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/show_mando.pl?93) for that instrument (aside from the date it was shipped, all the information comes from Stan!). Thanks to Stan again for supplying the archives with such beautiful images. You might have noticed that a staggering amount of the mandolin archive records with photos were donated by Elderly Instruments.. we're very grateful for all the personal time and resources Stan has contributed to our project!
It's cool to see this one surface- previous information we had was from Julius Bellson's log book, and was simply the shipping date and the fact that it was an F5. Interesting sunburst on this one, yes? Unlike the very smooth ones normally seen!
It's fun that a number of F5s are having their 81st or 80th birthday this month.

..yep..ugly burst...phooey....I apologize for saying it must be gone earlier....cuz when I clicked on it..it went to an Elderly page that said "that" page didnt exist anymore...usually meaning the item didnt exist any more...I want that case.. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blues.gif

Dan B:
is ther any chance of Bellson's log book appearing in your archive somewhere???
Evan: As far as I know that's where Darryl got the info for records with "Shipped XX" where XX is a date.. I think the book itself is no longer accessible to us. I'm not sure of the full story really! There are various apocraphal stories I've heard about other sets of records or notes with more listings, but I'm skeptical until I see them really!
The visibility of the mandolin archive has helped bring out quite a bit of new information.. but obviously I think we only have about 60% of the picture at this point. My favorite bit is "filling in the gaps with information on the non-master models inside the serial number batches!

Dan, I have a couple for you. A 1915 A and a 1916 A.
I will try to get you the pictures and info in the next little while.
Great job that you are doing with the archive. Full marks!!
Tony.
it looks like it was sold.

Price was too low that's why it didn't last long.
It looked to be in only fair to partly cloudy condition or in Gruhn's grade VG- or in Mandolin Bros. grade: best one we've ever had!
Elderly are some great people to deal with. I bet they got
their part on this consignment.

So what is the new going rate for partly sunny to sunny Loars? #Seems like they've lurched upward quite a bit lately.

If only it was half of a matched pair - then I would have bought them both!

It would have been nice if my wife would have got me that: My birthday is March 8th.

The going rate today is what a willing seller will accept from a giving buyer. If you see one below 100 grand today better look for something wrong with it. I think the top end today is $125K for a minty one or other rarity like Fern Loar, reversed binding July 9th from the Monroe batch, one piece back or special gold plated parts which was pretty rare in Loar era. I think the price of a Loar is on a scale with the price of gas.
