View Full Version : F5G Seam Seperation?

When I was cleaning up my F5G I noticed that there are places on the back seam that look odd. #This is the first mandolin I've owned with an unbound back, so I'm not sure if this is part of the normal aging process and only noticable because of the unbound back or something I should be concerned about.

Just as a little background the mandolin is about a year and half old. I can't really feel anything in these areas that seems to indicate seperation, but it seems like when I first got the mandolin there was only one very small place that looked like that on the back seam.

It could well be the normal action of the wood if it is too dry. I would suggest checking where it is kept. If it is less thean 45% then it needs more...but not moisture directly on the wood. It if were a sereration you would know it. As the humidity increases it may return to normal.

I have a F5G as well about a year old. I have kept the humidity right with this, as I manage a music store I'm aware of this. At where the pointy heel cap is on the back it is seperated like crack form the back. Is this a major problem? Joe or others? Thanks, Tim

It is impossible to tell without seeing the mandolin. If there is an actual seperation it should be reglued. However, if it is just shrinkage, then it is not likely to be anything to worry about. If you think there is a seperation you are welcome to ship it to us for inspection. You can reach me at jvest@gibson.com if you need to get info for that.
