there's that famous bumper sticker which states that whoever collects the most guitars before they die, wins.
who's way out there in front in the mandolin stakes?
"... tell st. peter at the golden gate i ain't got time, he'll have to wait 'cause i just got to have another ... mandolin."

I have one. Will always only have one. But, I am currently babysitting a very nice Red Diamond, so, I guess that would be 1 1/2?

I have way too many -- some quality ones, of course, but many just adding to the heap. Lots need work or parts.
Then again, there is the friend who had about 400 bowlbacks.
Remember... there is always somemore more insane then yourself. Of course, they either open stores or start museums to feed their MAS.
The other truism is thet we are only really renting these. Many of these will outlast us on this earth, were here before us and will be here after we are gone.

My philosophy is never have more than you can play regularly. I have come to admire people who only have one great mandolin, but still play a lot and play a variety of music. Maybe I will go that route at some point. I have four mandolins and I have a unique purpose for each one that has me playing each instrument multiple times every week. I could probably handle two or three more and keep that philosophy, but that would be it. After that, it would just be collecting and that doesn't interest me.

I definitely agree that I have way too many. Part of my MAS was an in-hand exploration of the subtleties of the bowlback. I consider the cost etc merely tuition in my self-education. Now I am reaching saturation and need to de-access much of this.
Of course, there is little excuse for having too many of the other kind. But I do rotate them as players (like tires) often.

To many mandolins is OK. Its tires and refrigerators in fron of your house that mystifies me. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

357mag, that's funny. Don't forget cars on blocks, either.
I sometimes think of paring down to just my Arches, but then I think I need to keep the Kentucky for those sticky evenings on the porch when I don't want to sweat on my good mando, and then I play an oval and think "This is such a different sound." It's an illness!

I own only one, but have another one coming in a few months. My first thought was to try and sell the first when the new one arrives. I had recently had the first in hospital for a fret dress and to have a new bridge installed. I was mando-less for two weeks. I didn't like that very much.

I admire the folks that only have one mandolin or guitar. I'm sure they know that one axe very well...kinda like a marriage, guess I've got wandering eyes...Some who wander are not lost, just looking for a different mando
