View Full Version : SOS help! Mando gift for Girlfiriend

Dec-12-2005, 12:03pm
I honestly dont know what to get my girlfriend. Her new mando should be finished up by Feb, therefore buying her a gift mando related seemed like the thing that I should do. However once I went to order some stuff, nothing came to mind. I play mandolin, shouldnt I know what to get her? Any good suggestions? What would be a really nice gift that would compliment her new mando to be?

A nice strap, a couple of those coveted, politically incorrect picks, mando-shaped, or otherwise mando related jewelry.
Is the mandolin going to be in a good case? How much can you spend?

Get her a Tone Gard, better yet two of them. Maybe she'd share.

A complete collection of Mandolin World News!
I see Dix Bruce put up an ad today on the classifieds for stuff mando players need.

A mandolin cafe or jazzmando t-shirt, a mandolin pin, posters...
I'm surprised that no one mentioned the shirts...I hoping to get one from Santa this year...

Check with Jerry Logan to see what he has available in mando jewelry.

My Webpage (http://www.jerrylogan.com/)

He'll also custom make pieces, but it's a bit late for that.

I have some great silver earrings, and a copper and silver pendant he designed from a photo of my two point.

OK, back to reality: I don't care if she does play the mandolin. No one who wants to keep a girlfriend gets her mando stuff for Christmas! She probably drives a car also, but you don't want to get her a set of tires. Also, asking advice from a bunch of musicians about anything to do with your love life is a recipie for disaster! Ask her girlfriends, her sister or her Mom.

Back when I my wife and I had only a year or so of marrige I bought her stuff like an clothes iron, waffle maker, microwave for Christmas.....you who have been married longer know how that went. Now 23 years later I am on board and got the hang of this gift thing http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Tools and stuff to help around the house are fine for ME but not for HER....:/

Old maxim that still applies:
If buying for a lady and you don't know what to get her
DO NOT get her anything that uses batteries or plugs into the wall. The less utilitarian the better.
Conversely,
If buying for a man and you don't know what to get him,
DO get him anything that uses batteries or plugs into the wall. The more utilitarian the better.

Assuming she really WANTS something mando related, and assuming the new mando comes with a HS case, how about a monogrammed case cover?
Metronome, one of those old fashioned wind up types. (yes utilitarian, but it is old fashioned and a little extravigant)
Week at mandolin / bluegrass camp.
A nice display case for her old mando, assuming she is keeping it for sentimental reasons.
Write a song about HER.

I certainly hope she doesn't peruse the Mandolin Cafe message board!

Get her a vacuum cleaner, the gift that keeps on giving, that's what I got for all of my ex-wives.

If she's really into music I don't think something utilitarian like a tuner is a bad idea, but some folks (including my wife) don't like the Intellitouch display. I plan on buying her one of the LED tuners to replace one that disappeared during our wedding jam... believe it or not! If she's got a new mando on the way, maybe an "instrument care kit" would be in order (humidifier, instrument polish, strings, cutter, winder...). My wife is a big Peter Ostroushko fan so for her birthday I e-mailed Peter about tabbing out some of his music. I didn't follow through, but I intend to do it for her when I decide what tunes to get. I know I could do well for her with a Laurie Lewis/Tom Rozum river trip too, but that's not in the budget this Christmas!

Gifts are such a personal thing, I hope some of the ideas suggested in this thread strike a chord. (bad pun intended) There's nothing wrong with non-mando related gifts either, but I know my wife would appreciate the music related gifts as much as I would.

I asked my wife what she wanted for Christmas and she said a D-I-V-O-R-C-E, I told her I wasn't planning on spending that much! Batta Bing! rimshot
She did say she wanted a plasma TV, wow I guess I'm gonna have to sell my plasma to afford it. geesh!
I think a Chia Pet would be the right thing to get.
