I have a recording of this done as part of a medley by a hammered dulcimer player named Jim Taylor on his album "Come before Snow". Anyone know aggod source for O'Carolan music? Thanks

"Anyone knows a good source for O'Carolan music?"

There are several sources for O'Carolan tunes. Here are some:

1. A section devoted to O'Carolan tunes in the Tabalture section of mandolincafe
2. Book: Complete Collection of O'Carolan Irish Tunes, published by Ossian. This is one of the best sources and includes copies of original manuscripts in addition to a comprehensive set of tunes in standard notation.
3. Some tunes can be found in the Tunes section of thesession.org. You can get ABC and standard notation there

Hope this helps

There's also this webpage:

http://www.contemplator.com/carolan/

It has music and midi files.

And, as mentioned above, thesession.org; here's the tune you asked for:

http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1493

Thesession.org includes comments submitted by members, as well as the tunes, for example:

"The story goes that Carolan drank too much and this made him ill. His doctor took him off drinking. But now Carolan felt even worse, so off he goes for a second opinion about his ilness. Enter Dr. John Stafford. The good old Doc's receipt ( or prescription as we now refer to it ) was to have a drink! Happily, Carolan's spirits were lifted! Derek Bell of the Chieftans play this peice on a CD of the same name. This CD, Carolan's Receipt along with his CD Carolan's Favourite, are devoted to the music of Carolan..."

You can also find "the complete works of Carolan" (from O'Sullivan's 1958 edition, which is the same as the Ossian book referenced above) here (http://www.oldmusicproject.com/occ/tunes.html) in sheet music, abc, and MIDI formats. I made myself a book from these by printing out and binding all of the sheet music version. Note, however, that the compiler of this web site has transposed all of the tune that are in "unusual" keys (i.e. not those usually played in Irish sessions) into more common keys, typically A, D or G. The original key is indicated below the score.

The same web site also has a second collection of Carolan tunes here (http://www.oldmusicproject.com/OneilsOcarolans.html). These are taken from the earlier O'Neill's music of Ireland. As much of this has been orally transmitted, there are any number of differences between the two collections, making one or the other more pleasant to play. Also, O'Neill has a number of tunes that are not in the (supposedly complete) Sullivan collection, because Sullivan was insufficiently convinced of their authorship. So, well worth downloading both collections.
