On a similar theme to recent posts about Mandolin Bros. and Elderly, I have some time off work next week and am considering heading to the Acoustic Music Company shop in Brighton. It's about a 3 to 4 hour drive and I do not need a new instrument or have the money for the kind I would love to try out (i.e. Collings, Phoenix, Rigel etc.)

Is it worth a 3 or 4 hour journey just to window shop?

yup.

March in with a bucket of KFC under your arm, if your worried about keeping it interesting:laugh:

Absolutely. It's like Disneyland. So many mandos, so little time!

Yep it's worth the visit!! Even just to see an original gibson mandobass!! That thing is totally cool looking! Also Trevor is good stand up guy! I took the trip from Dublin but I reckon we got there in less than 4 hours!!

Mandolin heaven! If you want to see and/or compare mandolins there is nowhere else in the UK or as Trevor would probably say, simply "nowhere else...". Check out the website - it now even works with my MAC!

adgefan,
Give me a call and let me know when you are coming. I don't keep regular hours in the shop but am happy to turn up and show you what we have, no obligation. I belive we have more mandolins than any of the US shops (I have vivited most of them and am told we have a wider selection than those I haven't visited). If you phone the shop 01273 671841 they will give you my mobile number.

Trevor, thanks for your offer of help! If I do come down it will be the end of the week but forecasts of snow and gales are putting me off. I'm really tempted to come but at the same time terrified I'll end up buying something I can't afford. Or worse, I'll end up buying something I *can* afford but not as good as I'd like. Anyway, if I don't make it this week I'll definitely be there once I've saved enough to afford a decent upgrade from what I have already. So see you early next year, probably!

adge,
It makes sense to save up and get the best you can afford, otherwise MAS might eat you! Though IMHO the best sound starts from a bit over a grand (£s not$s), after that its a mtter of personal preference, scroll, level of trim etc. Remember to call or email from the website and let me know when you are coming.

Hi Trevor. My brother Jacques is back in France now and is delighted with the Eastman 815 he got from your shop. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Aran,
We just got our first supply of Eastman mandolins from a new UK distributor, rather than from the US as before. Prices are very different, I don't know why, I've asked but they don't seem to now either!! Anyways some have gone up and some down (changes won't be n the website for about a week). The 815 has gone down, so if you ask Jaques to contact me I will refund the difference.

I've only visited online but I bought a nice Jimmy Moon mandolin from them. The service was wonderful and friendly, and the mando is great. I'd love to go in person.

Trevor,
Wow that's a pleasent surprise. I will let Jaques know and get him to call you.

That's the most decent thing I have heard in such long time. Fair play to you for it,

I know where I'll be curing my MAS next.

Cheers
Aran
