Hey there,
I'll be traveling thru Norfolk and Williamsburg Virginia the first weekend in December. I was wondering if there are any bluegrass events or mandolin stores, etc to check out.
Thanks,
Kirk

Kirk,

Not much in the way of mandolin stores down here (that I know of anyway) We have the standard GC and a few mom and pop stores. And here is a place where you can find events in the area:

Good luck...maybe check the regional jams...

Thanks Brian,
Do you know of any regional jams? Is there a bluegrass association in the area?

I'm in Norfolk and people around here don't even know what a mandolin looks like! All the great bluegrass and Old Time music is out in the central and northern parts of VA it seems like and there is a Bluegrass Assoc here but I don't have any info on it but in Virginia Beach right next to Norfolk in the Pembroke Mall is the White Horse Irish Pub and there is a great bluegrass, folk, Celtic jam every Wed night that starts about 8pm. The mall is on the corner on Independance Blvd. and Virginia Beach Blvd.

BrianT stops in right much with his butt kicking Bibey Gibson and you can spot me with my Flatiron F. Usually the fiddlers out number everyone but it's always a fun jam.

Stop on by and say hi! E-mail me if you need more info.

Thanks Jim,
I'll be getting in Wed. evening but I may try to get over there and pick a little. Than would be great (if I'm up to it!)

Probably not what you are interested in, but...

if you are into Scottish/Shetland type fiddling, check if Jenny Edenborn is scheduled to play in the Colonial Williamsburg taverns, and which one. Monster player - one of my favorite fiddle players, relatively unknown cause she's stayed local with a fairly good job. She played on a several tracks on my On Fire & Ready! album - same sessions that Martin Simpson played guitar on.

Thanks Niles,
I'll be staying in Williamsburg for a few nights and I'll look and see if she's around.
Love your books, by the way. Even though my dog ate part of bluegrass up the neck! (honestly, I'd be a better player but my dog ate my homework http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif )
