Hi folks,
I'm new on the site here...probably saw a few of you folks down at Roanoke (I was the guy with the Rigel).

I've been trying to figure out a particular chord that's used a lot in modern bluegrass. It's built on the root chord, and you will hear a lot of players switch from the standard offbeat chop to a measure of 4 beats of a downbeat chop. The chord they use is some kind of 7th or 6th chord - I can get close to it but just can't nail it.

Skaggs does it in Pig in a Pen, for example, Wayne Benson does it a ton. Do you all know what I'm talking about, and if so can you help me out?

Thanks!

Without seeing/hearing it, it could be (in A) 9475, low to high. That's an A6. I asked Butchie about that chord once, his response: "I hate that".

Yeah I know a lot of traditional folks don't like it. To each his own, I think it sounds ok when used sparingly. I don't have my mando here at work but as soon as I get home I'll give that a try!

Thanks,
Trace

Not sure but did you check the "Chord Library" on this site, located to the left of the Home Page under the "Chord Resource"? There's a drop down as well that lets you select the particular chord you're looking for.

I'm a big Skaggs fan. I'll have to listen to "Pig In a Pen" to get a better idea of where this chord is coming in. Please, keep us posted on what you find. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

Cincy, I think you are hearing the 7th (G note) resolving to the D chord. I usually just slide up to the 5th fret on the 3rd string and play :

E|=======0======
A|=======0======
D|======>5======
G|=======X======

over the A, for that lick and strum it a little faster than the chop, then resume chopping on the D.
