Just wanted to say hi to the folks at this site. #I picked up a new guitar this weekend (Santa Cruz OM), and while I was at it, decided to get a "toy" mandolin. #I came home with an Epiphone, a discontinued model.
I know that I should start with something better than this, but the Santa Cruz set me back quite a piece of $$.
In any event, as I strummed a few basic chords on the mando, I immediately had happy feet. #These things just scream out FUN!!!!
I will have to keep it under wraps until the holiday season, but will lurk around and start to read some posts here.
Regards,

Jim-
Welcome to the cafe! #I am new here also. #Don't worry too much about the quality of your Epi.. I'm starting out on a Fender... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
There is some great information here and personally I am glad I went with a "cheaper" mando to start with. #I can now focus on saving up for what I really want. #Played an oval hole the other day...
Mmmmmmmmmm... good!

Yes, welcome, and play a lot. You may find that in a few months you're ready to trade in that Santa Cruz OM for a really nice hand made mandolin.

Welcome Jim D
Nothing wrong with that Epi. If it plays half way decent. It,ll be a great starter. And if you have to spend a few bucks to have it set up, thats ok too. You might not ever want to sell it later on when you graduate to something better. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hi,
Welcome - I also started on guitar and migrated to mandolin. I find melody a LOT easier on a mandolin because of the tuning in fifths than I ever did on the guitar. The only thing stopping me from being infected with MAS is a lack of cash but I am covetous http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Welcome to both "Jim" and "Cetecea" ! Hey, starting out and learning with something lowline is prefectly OK!
I know folks who have went "all out" with some High $$ mando's and in a few months they've somehow, lost interest and stored them away in a closet somewhere. That's how I obtained my first Sigma/Martin guitar (though not a high dollar one) due to someone doing the same thing after buying it and wanting to learn but then gave up on it and had it up for sale. I've had it for 13 years now!
Anyway, Welcome once again and do visit often and drop a line or so in on a topic! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif # #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif
