I have a Bitterroot Custom. It is supposed to have the same finish as the Yellowstone and it is red sunburst. The finish itself is my question. It seems to be thick and for lack of a better discription attached to the wood as opposed to integrated into the wood. So it feels more plastic rather than woody to the touch. I am not sure why that bothers me so much as I really like the sound, but it does. To be quite honest it looks like the finish you would expect on cheeper mandolins. Can somebody enlighten me as to what that finish is? Thanks in advance.

Why don't you e-mail Paula Jean Lewis at Sound to Earth? She's helpful, prompt and knows pretty much everything about Weber and Flatiron instruments.

Can't tell you much about the finish. It's probably the standard weber laquer...in which case you might find that the finish will integrate into the wood grain patterns as it ages and shrinks. I have a weber that smelled of laquer for quite a while after I bought it and now has integrated, like I just described. This happened after about 2 years and lots of playing. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Or you can sell your Weber and buy a Gibson F9 which seems to have no finish at all. Anywhere! #Nick:)
