We are just starting out... need a sound system to play for smaller venues... 50 - 200 people... indoor and outdoor. Like festivals, churches, etc. What size speakers should we consider. We play oldtime/bluegrass.... plan to use a couple condenser mics and maybe a mike on bass. So I think 4 channels will be enough. Do you all have any suggestions of systems you use. or perhaps even have any for sale as you might be upgrading?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, you will need a minimum of 8 channels. #Trust me.
Also, don't be afraid to chat up sound men and inquire about equipment when you can.
Check out these sites, there is much to learn!

Specs notable: for phantom power , minimum 48V, for most condensers.
Mackie is made in Washington state , Carvin in San Diego California, if that matters.

Indoor is a challenge. #Outdoor is impossible without lots of power. #We've been trying to do both with the same system. #Almost imposible? #I'll be interested to see the responses. #Dan

We've found the Yamaha Club series 800 watt powered mixer and the Yamaha 12" speakers to be excellent for both indoor and outdoor.
I thought the Yamaha speakers had a more natural sound for acoustic instruments than Mackie or JBL. (but that was 5 years ago, I haven't heard their new stuff.)
The Yamaha has been extremely reliable, no problems at all in over 500 concerts, gigs, weddings etc.
I would recommend 8 channels as well.

Good luck,
Mark
