I have been playing an A style round hole for 2 years and have allways picked at the bottom of the sound hole. Just got a new F style this week and with the longer fretboard have had to adjust my picking closer to the bridge. I dont like playing on top of the frets. Im getting adjusted though . probably be ok in week or 2 http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I started on an F style and have always had, and still do have, a poblem o my iht hand sneaking back gradually toward the bridge while I'm picking. The sond really thins out and I loose a lot of the tone hat my mandoling is capable of and usually screw up the song when I try to move my hand back up to where it is supposed to be. I don't have this problem nearly as bad with the round hole flatiron that i just got. I don't know why though. Does anyone else experience the samr thing?

A lot of folks have the extention "scooped" or partly cut away so that they don't have to play over the frets. Don't give up the sweet spot!

I have the opposite problem, my hand seems to creep farther from the bridge, I have to work on keeping it back a bit LOL. The scalloped extension really helps though, on my first mandolin I was always clacking on the fretboard extension (non-scalloped)

I've always picked well up over the fretboard, usually near fret 15 or so. Seems to sound the fullest, and give me the best response.
I thought this was normal?!
