If your looking to record onto you computer, check out a simple program for multitracking called Goldwave. It's free.
Gold Wave Link (http://www.goldwave.com/)
For soundrecorder, you should open sound recorder and not have any popups warning you of problems. If so, then address the issue.
Once Soundrecorder is up, select Edit>Audio Properties.
Set the preferred audio device for both playback, and recording and set the volumes to max.
That is typically where the problem is. If not, you may have a configuration issue with your soundcard. This can be checked in the control panel under Sounds & Multimedia/Audio.

Cowboy-
I have been wanting to use my new computer at home as a mini play around recording studio for a while but don't know the best way about it. Once I have Gold Wave, how does my 1/4 inch cable from my mic go into my computer? Can I just buy a phatom power supply and an adapter to fit into the little hole for the mic that comes with my sound card? What is the best setup (hardware/software) for using your computer for a cheap studio?
