Ive started to give guy some lessons. And I must say for only playing 2 months hes made great strides while studying with another teacher. I havent given lessons in a long time and Im finding it kinda cool. Hes wanting to video tape our lessons so he can have a point of reference. Are there any other teachers out there that use this as a tool?

Scotti, I've had several students videotape or record lessons. Especially those that travel some distance for a lesson or workshop because alot of things get covered.
For some you can tell them what to do and they just don't hear it...they need to see it and watch whatever it is they need to 'see' to have it sink in right. I can see how it helps if they have to view it over and over and over again. So I've played parts up to speed and then several varying tempos along with several ways to possibly play something for variation.

Scotti, I will offer a student's perspective and also share a technique that I use to record my sessions. #
I think video is great. #I have several commercial videos and DVDs and they are my favorite formats.
I'm currently taking lessons very sporadically due to my high business travel. #In fact, my next physical lesson will be in a month. #However, during my sessions, I record future lessons of tunes and techniques on my Pocket PC PDA device in the Outlook Notes section. #We record the tunes (slow and up-tempo)and I can add notes with the stylus. #I label the tunes or techniques and then transfer all this to Outlook Notes on my laptop. #It's pretty slick, but not as good as video. #I already owned the PDA and figured that I could put it to good use.

..I like the idea of taping the lessons...just dont want to throw all my hot licks out there http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ......I wish when I was learning there was somebody I could have went to for a lesson and video taped it. Ive got some video of Dorsey Harvey and me playing.....of course everything he played was a lesson within itself. Jason..I know what you mean....with the tape you can stop short of pullin your hair out with students that just dont get it the 27th time around..they can take the tape home..youve got peace of mind...they have still got their lesson...

Hey Scotti
Mike told me about that idea.
I think it sounds great. tablature can be so hard to wade through when your not sure what it is your playing .
But when you see it and hear the tones that can't be taught
on paper ,that's a great tool.
