I'm about to do my first sunburst and now I'm confident that it will look as good as a Gibson.

I knew that the 70's was Gibson's "dark age", but I had no idea that the darkness extended so deeply into the aesthetic realm. I've seen a lot of 70's F-5's that looked OK but sounded bad, but aside from the lump scroll model, I've never seen a worse looking example of Gibson's dark age. I hope I still will be able to sleep tonight. Boy, was that ugly!

Actually, I'm sure no one got fired. By that time, they didn't have a clue what was right and what was not. I'm glad they realized their mistake and got things right.

I am glad I wasn't the only one who saw that thing and thought it was the worst finish ever.
Dang......I kinda liked it......but I am prone to extremes. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I've seen the same kind of thing on '70's era archtops such as ES 175's and even Byrdlands --- I've always called it the "spray can" school of sunburst finishes.

The 70's were an ugly time. I remodeled my kitchen a few years ago because it had been remuddled in the 70's (avacado green appliances, dropped ceiling, cigar store indian wallpaper... you get the picture). I guess mandolins were no different!

I got some split western red cedar guitar tops from my friend when he remodeled his 70s kitchen and took the split cedar shakes off the wall! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
It's invaded the cafe!
