Was perusing Mike Compton's website and reading his latest journal entry. Seems he has been learning (and struggling with) some Nickel Creek tunes. He has some very flattering things to say about Thile and the group.
I know Nickel Creek really bugs some folks and others love their music (I'm in the latter camp), but I thought it was awesome to hear a very traditional-type player like Compton give his take on their music.
So check it out. Like I said, it's his latest journal entry at www.mikecompton.net

I closely follow both, as I consider both masters of their respective styles (if you can put one "style" on either player). I'm not surprised that Mike finds some serious worthwhile substance in Chris Thile's work. Mike has drawn from Bluegrass, Blues, Folk,Jazz, etc. It seems to me that since his main instrument is mandolin, if you maintain an open mind, there's lots and lots that can be learned from Chris Thile's playing. I think keeping an open mind is important, since a lot of what I see in Chris's playing is uncharted territory.

I really liked hearing the angst in his thoughts as he discribed learning material that took him out of his musical comfort zone. Very human.

What really surprised me was his comments about Chris' songwriting ability.

His song "Doubting Thomas" on the current CD is an outstanding tune and very personal look at human failure
with regard to religious faith. Not many songwriters these
days will deal with such a private subject in such an impressive way.
