I made the finals at the Flat Rock Music Festival Songwriter Contest. I will be performing with 10 other finalists on the main stage this weekend in Flat Rock NC.

The song I entered is Trigger My Redemption from my new CD and it is a Murder Ballad/Love Story with a twist. Mandolins play a big part in the story.

Check out the lyrics:

Trigger My Redemption
Words and Music Eric Bannan Copyright 2005

My trade is making mandolins down east Virginia way
I still hear the demons whisper from my younger day
A half remembered bar fight a shadow brawler slain
Justice never found me, the pain and guilt remain

A tattered road musician with a worn and battered case
Barefoot in my doorway she stood and met my gaze
When I repaired her mandolin I noticed she was praying
She played Red Haired Boy and smiled, I knew that she’d be staying

Chorus:

The days flow by like rounded stones skipping off the water
I could smell a hint of summer on the wind that brought her
I killed a man on Chincoteague, I was down to just one question
Would the simple act of loving her, trigger my redemption

Heard your seeking an apprentice she looked away and said.
I took her on, she carved and sanded till her fingers bled
I would look up from my work that laughing smile she’d toss
But I was stranded on the banks of pain, a river miles across.

Eventually her love for me shone clear as light of day
But she could feel the darkness that made me shy away
With sawdust in her hair and clothes so confident and certain
She begged me open up my world, share with her my burden

Chorus:

She heard my confession, and then led me by my hand,
Out beyond the woodshed to the weeping willow stand
There she swore her love for me would never be forsaken
Our union would create a life to replace the one I’d taken

It’s been seven summers since that day beneath the trees
A laughing set of triplet girls are bouncing on our knees
Faith, Hope and Charity the names that we have given
I thank the lord for every day, of this life I’m living

Here is a link to a sample of the track if your interested.

Hey Bus Stop Eddy, I like the words, but since I'm at the library, I can't listen to the tune.

I wonder how many songs there are with mando-centric lyrics.

Picasso's Mandolin - Guy Clark
Hobo's Mandolin - Mike Smith
Tom Thompson's Mandolin - Bob Yates

David Newlands wrote a poem called Tom Thompson's Mandolin. David and Bob were unaware of the other Tom Thompson's Mandolin until I told them. Tom Thompson was a Canadian painter who was an influence on the group of Canadian painters called The Group Of Seven. His mandolin, which often accompanied him on wilderness canoe trips is a ten string bowl back. Luckily it was not with him when he mysteriously disappeared in Canoe Lake on his last expedition.
