there are times when I play in a band with an electical instrument. #I normally pick right over the magnetic pickup. #Where do they ( the instrument makers )recommend as the best pick site #to get the most out of an instrument? #Unless you set up a recorder on the other side of the room Its kind of hard to tell what sound you are producing when you are behind everything.
I like to rest my palm on the bridge and pick there (which on my Mann is behind the pickup). But you can get some neat effects by picking in different areas---closer to the neck for warmth, closer to the bridge for something a little more brittle...

Ditto on bjc's comment. The sound really changes alot from bridge to neck. What I did is plug in at home, crank it up then experiment w/ positions. Sometimes I'll even play over the last couple of frets for a nice sweet warm tone. FYI I'm playing a 5 string solid body Schwab. bjc, I've got a Mann EM-8 on order, CAN'T WAIT! Kenneth, Check out the 4 and 5 string electric mandolin section, you may find some interesting topics to help make sense of the beasty world of electricity...
