Hello,

Here is a place to look at some really old and sometimes funny pictures of Bluegrass, mandolins and related stuff. #These pictures I'm posting were recently scanned from Dads archive of slides. #I plan to do mine soon too. #I was usually standing next to Dad when these were taken, so they have alot of meaning to me. #Thanks Dad for capturing this stuff.

Bill Monroe..June 68 Norwalk OH

Roger Sprung..old time banjoist and dealer...hawking banjos and such to pay for his trip from New York area. Berryville 1967
I'm surprised you refer to him as an "old time banjoist"-

He's best known for his series of "progressive BG"
LP:s on Folkways, in the 60's.
with drums (full set as I recall)
and a wildly eclectic repertoire.

Songs like "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Hello, Dolly".
The first album had Doc Watson on guitar.
The second and third albums had Jon Sholle; I'm
pretty sure they were his first records, and I believe he was
15-16 at the time.

And, since this is a mandolin cafe: the mandolin player
was Jody Stecher.

f5loar
Sep-24-2005, 4:23pm
Actually Roger was a master at all styles of the banjo from classical to new grass. He was pretty effective on the old time clawhammer and drop thumb styles. I guess Darryl may have only gone by has van booth when he was doing his 15th break on "Old Cluck Hen" clawhammer style.
Roger continues to come to Galax every year bringing with him top notch pickers. I've had the pleasure of being in his "pick-up" band many times and can say he knows his stuff. I bought my 2nd Gibson mandolin from Roger in 1966.

JD Crowe and the Kentucky Mt Boys..Reidsville NC 1969 or 69

Doyle is playing my Randy Wood F-12 conversion..Red Allen on guitar and Bobby on bass
When I watched this group at a Holiday Inn in
Lexington, in 1969, Red Allen had left the group.
I can't for the life of me remember who replaced him,
anyone know?

But I certainly remember Lawson's mandolin
(not this one)
because of its horrible action. He let me try it and
I could hardly
make the strings touch the frets.

My friend Peter Winblad, himself a banjo player,
drooled over Crowe's backup,
of course, hadn't heard any better. Crowe and Emerson
were the two best banjo players I heard that
summer.

f5loar
Sep-27-2005, 2:33pm
I thought when Red left, Lawson went to guitar and Larry Rice came in on mandolin. Lawson leaves and Tony Rice comes in on guitar. There could have been some temps in-between these guys. Poor Crowe went through as many band members as Jimmy Martin!

"Poor Crowe":... hmmm... ask Jimmy about that (actually many people did)... he always felt stabbed in the back when JD left him, so "what goes around comes around" I guess.

That lineup with Allen and Lawson was too hard-core to last in 1969! They needed the smoother Rice sound to become successful in the newgrass movement. Don't get me wrong -- I love the Rice bros. (and just bought Larry's latest CD) -- but Red Allen with Doyle on tenor was radioactive.

Moose
Sep-27-2005, 4:18pm
swampstomper: Good - and interesting - post! Incidently, IMHO, the Sunny Mountain Boys -: "Audy" Blaylock with David Nance(dobro), and Dwight D.,was a good band for Jimmy. Be interestin' to hear Jimmy's opinion of same. If(!?) he were still among us, I'm sure he would offer it .... The band that included Lois Johnson/Kirk Hansord(sp.) cut some of Jimmy's finest material - in particular, the gospel numbers. Lois Johnson did GREAT(!) harmony! - OK.., I'm goin' back to work... sorry to rattle on... Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Looking back, it's amazing to remember that you could show up late on a Friday afternoon, find a good place to pitch a tent, and still get to sit right up front and watch a whole evening of now-legendary performances by the likes of Ralph Stanley, J.D. Crowe, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Grandpa Jones, John Hartford with Norman Blake, and more . . . all on the same bill.

Fred Bartenstein..editor of Muleskinner new and his girfriend 1967
Bartenstein, .... He emceed large portions of
Berryville in 1969, and was all over the place.
Also performed a duet with
Monroe, as you can see from the very first picture
on his website. Could be that's my head in the first row,
partly hidden by the tape recorders.

I remember Muleskinner News was in the last stages
of preparation that summer. Somewhere in the background
there was a hillbilly living in New Jersey, Clifton
Bailey, a friend (or so he claimed) of Ralph Stanley's and Don Reno's (re Bluegrass Unlimited: "it stinks",
but he never explained how).

Wonder if you, f5journl, or your dad, met him?

I spent a week in NYC towards the end of my trip, and
had a standing invitiation to see him through Peter
Winblad. He lived on a farm in some small village
in New Jersey. He took me around the village , to the bank,
the post office, etc. and introduced me as
"the boy (I was 24) from Sweden who plays the
Orange Blossom Special on the mandolin" (Winblad
had sent him a tape).

Forgive me for this egocentric reminiscing, but these pictures evoke memories of the period when I was most
actively involved in BG music - to the point
of oversaturation, I fear.

Thanks, Scott, for reminding us of this thread. #This thread, hands-down, has been my favorite of any in the last several years. #

Thanks Darryl for getting it started and sharing so much personal and collective bluegrass history!

Also, Darryl, I finally got a copy of Bluegrass-Country Soul this week (which has been rereleased on DVD) of Camp Springs in '71. #While watching it with the Fred Bartenstein commentary on, he points out a mandolin picker in a jam that he believes is you. #Is it you?

Question - In the picture of Sam Bush and Darryl, what mando is Sam holding? Certainly it can't be Hoss in 1969, but it does have block inlays. Can't see the headstock due to the glare...

Maybe another 1930's F5?

I just noticed Roger Sprung mentioned.. I used to tour with "old sausage fingers" in the early 60s. May have seen some of you at Galax, Union Grove, Hiawassee or Berryville.

What I learned from Sprung is that you grow from playing with people, not for people.

We alsways used to pick up an odd musician here or there. One festival in Virginia, we picked up this old fiddler just coming out of retirement. It was his first performance in years. We took first place with the help of Clark Kessinger.

Hey Bob,

I must have seen you play with Roger Sprung at Berryville in the early '70s sometime. Great festivals. I remember that Roger was the only guy there wearing a starched white shirt for all three days of the festival. Pretty wild music--for those times, anyway. Roger had a most unusual approach.

Did you overlap with Jody Stecher's tenure in that ensemble?

The mandolin Sam was holding in the picture with Darryl was a 39 or 40 vintage F5 that was owned by Wayne Stewart, (also featured in one of the photos) who Sam played with in Poor Richard's Almanac.

I loved the pix. #Thanks for sharing.
Due to financial contraints, the closest I got to a bluegrass festival in the 1960s-70's was listening to Ray Davis broadcasting from Johnny's New and Used Cars, 4801 *HAR*ford Road in Baltimore over WBMD.
Is the mandolin Norman Blake holding a Duffy creation?
I've seen one other like it. #I called that shape the "hurricane." #It reminded me of the hurricane symbol on weather maps.
Again, thanks a whole bunch.

That was the Duffey "duck", or one of them. If I recall correctly, it was stated here at the Cafe that he made two of them, with the mandolin player from Japan's Train 45, who later played with Cliff Waldron, having the second one.

Both Jody and Daryl Anger played on Roger's Cds. I just did the festival tours. I beleive he was the first to record Doc Watson. We used to visit with Doc in Deep Gap every summer.

We also stayed wirh Obrey Ramsey, got thrown out of the Van Hoy residence for playing Devil's Dream, visted the Wests and their mandolin collection, sold lots of albums and even won Galax one year. I started when I was 14 and it was a trip!

I still use the guitar strap Roger made for me. His hobby was tooling leather and he made some beautiful straps.

Those were the days!
