Just picked up "Theatre of the Unheard" by Darrell Scott, who sometimes plays with Tim O'Brien, Marty Stuart, and other groups. Scott was known around Boston in the late 80's and early 90's as a hot guitar player, so it was a real suprise and delight to hear his finely crafted songs alongside his great picking on guitars, dobro, and mandolin. This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time, and I thought I'd pass it along.
Oddy enough this set of songs was written during his Boston days and an earlier recorded album of them was rejected by the label....

I agree wholeheartedly...in a world full of talent, Darrell stands heads above most! I believe that guy could sing anything, any style, in addition to everything else.

yep, one of the best singer/songwriters around. And a pretty good mandolin player too!

Darrell who ?? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I first noticed him with Tim O'Brian on "Bluegrass Documentary". Excellent!!
Didn't he also write one or two of the hits for the Dixie Chicks?
Darrell is really unbelievable, singer, songwriter and picker. His songs really get to me. He wrote 'You'll never leave Harlen Alive" that Patty Loveless did. Fantastic story. He also has written hits for Garth Brooks, Sara Evans(he plays cittern on 4 songs on her soon to be released cd), Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, Travis Tritt(It's a great day to be alive). And of course his work with Tim O'brien, Steve Earle, and Sam Bush. He is the man. I have a friend that makes instrument for Darrell, his name is Grey Burchette from Elkin, NC. He has made a cittern, baritone guitar and a standard 6 string dreadnought. I had to get one of his citterns after I saw Darrell's.

I just saw Mr Scott yesterday at the Rhythm and Roots festival in Bristol. I was blown away. I knew who he was yet hand't seen him live. I was very impressed. Tim O did some songs with him as well.
Darrell was playing an all Koa Taylor Dreadnaught. Sounded real good.

Yep, he's a great singer. i recommend his other 2, also. This above mentioned album was his first attempt that somehow got shelved by the record labels. Aloha from Nashville and Family Tree (I think that's the name) both have some good songs on them. I saw him w/Tim O and he's great.

A few years ago,my son-in-law (at the time) John Weissberger was working part time as a bluegrass disc jockey and he sent me a Tim O'Brien-Darrell Scott CD which I have since let slip away. It was the first I'd heard of him and I was really impressed. He has a fine session in the achives of the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Show.

Grow - That Darrell Scott/Tim O'Brien CD is called "Reel Time" - It's just the two of them with all of their instruments recorded in a living room. It's one of my favorites. Lot's of folks have started recording his songs. Wasn't it Mountain Heart that recorded "With a Memory Like Mine" ?
Who else but Darrell Scott would write :
"They got tired but they don't sound Haggard
They got money but they don't have Cash"

Thanks for the review erick. I just listened to samples of it, and it really resonates with me: great lyrics, music, and musicianship, with a really haunting vibe -- and it has a couple of nice mando tunes as an added bonus.

That record is "Real Time", because it was recorded in real time in Darrell's living room. I agree, it may be one of my favorite recordings.
