Hey guys, I just learned that there will be a new Wayne Benson instructional DVD out soon and I thought I would let you guys (and girls) know in advance. #I can't wait to get my copy because Wayne is my other hero besides Bush, and trust me he can play Bush, Monroe, or just Wayne (which is a wonderful style in itself)! #Just a heads up for you!

Yes, I think Acutab is putting it out. Hey pdlstl, Wayne is always in top form! The dude covers all ranges of mandolin playing in my book! All you have to do is listen to him in some of the late night jams at festivals and you will see how much he has studied everyone in the mando realm! Simply just great stuff he always plays and very fitting to the song!

His 'An Instrumental Anthology' CD is pretty darn good. Supporting artists the on Benson's project. They include Scott Vestal (banjo), Rob Ickes (dobro), and Jeff Autry (guitar). Fiddle by Ron Stewart, Rickie Simpkins, Jim VanCleve, or Aubrey Haynie. Three different bass players (John Cowan, Mike Anglin, and Irl Hees) are also featured.

Wayne's wife, Kristen, has a new Cd with her banjo playing and Wayne does some great breaks on it.

Bluegrass 96 is one of my all time favorites! Bluegrass 98 is pretty good too!

I can't wait for the DVD!

My only caution to the casual shopper - If you have the Blugrass XX series, you will already have some but not all of the songs on the Anthology CD.

While I hate those "who is the best?" threads, I haven't seen anyone that I thought was in another league above Wayne.

I agree chirorehab, Wayne totally rips it on Bluegrass 96! #Also, the great thing about the Anthology CD is that it does include four new songs on it and that the whole CD is just the tunes that Wayne wrote and it gives you a chance to see his creativity. #And no, there aren't any in a league above Wayne!

Wayne Benson is largely responsible for me being into mandolins at all. At the (IIIrd Tyme Out presents) Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival of 2001 I had my first real run-in with bluegrass and mandolins both. I had a fleeting interest in the music, but no more. I was really only up there to help my father-in-law out with the concessions he was doing at the time. The more I was up there and the more I heard, the more I liked it, but there was still one single event that really got me into it. One afternoon, someone came out from the main barn and told me that there was a mandolin jam going on in there, and I maybe I'd like to go listen to it, and I did. I've been hooked on mandolins since. The moment is a lot easier to remember due to the fact that I had my digital camera with me, and used it to record a few really crappy sound clips. At the time, I had no clue who the people in the pictures were. Of course, that's Wayne on the right with the happening shirt, and the gentleman with the glasses looking into the camera is Ken Ratcliff of Silver Angel Mandolins (http://www.silverangelmandolins.com).

Can anyone tell me what it is they're playing?

I tried to guess it but couldn't - it sounds like it could be a variation of any number of fiddle tunes. Who is the fellow playing across from Wayne? I see Ken's father is sitting next to him.

Hello everyone – this is Wayne. Several people are right about the tune - it’s Soldier’s Joy.

I also wanted to confirm that I do have an instructional DVD coming out in early or mid April. If you’re interested, you can preorder now or I can add your email address to a list of people interested in the DVD when it is available.

I am new to the whole computer world and naturally the first place I found myself was in the mandolin café.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Thanks to everyone who has emailed about the dvd. I was gone this weekend, but wanted to reply to let everyone know you can email me at waynebenson@att.net if you want to preorder or know when the dvd is here. Red Tommy won't be on it, but most of the tunes from my solo CD will be, along with some more stuff. Lots of people have asked about it and I appreciate all the messages. The Wayne Benson model mandolin is doing great. I think they've sold the first 30. I just talked to the guy in TX that bought number 1.

Again, thanks to everyone for your interest and nice emails.

Yes it would be Maverick! It's a '26 or a '27, I don't remember. Great mandolin though!

AlanN
Mar-31-2004, 10:28am
It's a '26, he and I swapped once on his bus. He hardly wanted to swap back. Yep, it's a good one he got from Tony Boy Williamson.
