Only a few posts mention Minnesota, so I'm rather curious who's from my area on the boards. I'm a college student from Minneapolis, but I'm going to school in St. Thomas in St. Paul, where I'm currently taking mando lessons. So far, the only other person I've seen from MN is OlderThanWillie, so is anyone else out there?

I can SEE Minnesota from where I live, so I'm going to count myself in! I haven't heard or met anyone round here (La Crosse, Western WI), but I know there's a few BG festivals in the area so at least there's interest http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I live in St.Paul.
I too have St. Thomas connections-
When I was in high school, after a night of adult beverages, I drove my Dad's caddy through one of the stone arches on the campus's Summit avenue border.
So, now you know ALL mando players aren't geniuses....
I'm up in the northern 'burbs... Andover.

Little known MN factoid: One of Minnesota's best mandolin players leads the weekly Thursday noon jam session in the open area just outside of Scooter's restaurant at the St. Thomas campus in Saint Paul.

Do we get to guess?
I'll guess Peter O.
I live in West St. Paul, but I spend a lot of time at the jams at Homestead Pickin' Parlor in Richfield.

It's Bob something.. My journalism professor plays dulcimer with those guys, and he told me his name, but I forgot.. He's a great player, and his LaPlantt is a beautiful instrument. Does he play with any other bands? I stop by and watch them every chance I get, it's alot of fun.
Goldtopper, that's hilarious, although I hope no one was hurt.
I believe that'd be Bob Douglas, and he's a fabulous player and a fine gentleman.

My ma lives in Akeley--now where that is?
But I'm playing bass (and learning mando) way out here in Flagstaff.
Any of you going to the MN oldtime and bg festival? #Is it a good one? #I'm trying to plan a trip. #
The Foghorn Stringband (Portland, OR) will be there this year. #They are definitely worth seeing.

Amongst other things, Bob Douglas was a member of the original Powdermilk Biscuit band in the mid-70's.

Actually his name is Mark Neuzil, you might be thinking of the guy that plays the hammered dulcimer, but Mark plays the mountain dulcimer. As a new player who's very interested in learning how to play in jams, it's really fun to watch them play since they play alot of celtic tunes instead of solely bluegrass.

The August festival is the real deal. I believe Tony Rice is headlining this year. Last year it was Doyle and Co., Kruger Brothers etc.
Your Ma's from Akeley? I love that little town. They've got a small venue where they get some BG acts from time to time. Monroe Crossing has played there. It's called "The Woodtick Theatre", gotta love it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Ma is from ND, but lives a couple miles from Akeley. #A #brother in Nevis, another in Park Rapids, and a sister in Bemidji.
Oh yeah, the woodtick theater. #I've been there. #
Monroe Crossing played my wedding a few years back on Lake Bemidji. #

Lisa Fuglie, from Monroe Crossing, was my daughter's fiddle instructor a few years ago. #She's also an excellent mandolin player, and plays a number of other instruments as well.

I live in south Minneapolis, work in St Paul, occasionally visit Nowthen, hang out in Aitkin MN and Ajo AZ, and play music with my mando friends. I'd better check out the St Thomas thing (who knew?). Both festivals that MBOTMA puts on are fun, but August is better weather and bigger names. Love doing mandolin duets and trios.

I was born in Duluth, and live in Madison, WI now. The only thing I don't like about Minnesota is the Vikings. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
-John.
Have any of you attended the MBOTMA jam in South Minneapolis at Fellowship Hall, United Methodist last Monday of the month?
I went to it back in November and had a great time. #Haven't had time since, but may go this month.

Live in Winona. Work in Wisconsin. Play mostly for my cats and their friends.
tjg,
What is the Monday MBOTMA jam like? #One large group or several smaller groups? #Is it mainly geared towards hot pickers, or are all skill levels supported?

C'mon John, if it weren't for the Vikings, the Packers might never make the post-season!

Isn't that the truth-how about the famous meltownd last year? That was a classic, even for the Vikings. I may have to write a jig in honor of the Viking for that one. Maybe I'll call it the Cardinal Stomp.
-John.
That'll be a future trivia question:
Who won the 2003 North Division without being in first place for even a single second during the season ? (The Vikes lost the division after time expired).
Joe F: the jam I attended was pretty casual, a nice group of people. #There were <10 people there, it may have grown since then. #Skill level varied, but anyone welcome.

Hey Randy,
I saw you at the schoolhouse on Sat. I was the dipstick in the red jacket looking like he was taking a break from cleaning his garage to listen to some pickers.
You do an awsome job. Real tasteful playing and great rythem. Really fun to listen to and your daughters a hoot, what a cutie. Whatching you made me realize that lately I'm getting to tied up in learning and forgetting to have fun. You don't just look like you're having fun, you really are!
Made my day AND I finished the garage! After a little picking that is, I had to try some of the stuff you were doing when I got home. It's not quite as easy as you make it look.
I live in Brooklyn Center , MN , and had a jam at my house for five years - might start it up again this summer. I had a great workshop with Frank Wakefield at my house about a year ago , so folks the acoustic music scene is alive an well at the Mini- apple

Bill,
Thanks for the kind words, that was my granddaughter and she is a hoot, You should have introduced your self I always like talking mando,to have fun when I'm playing I have found it helps to not take myself to serious after all the worst thing that can happen is makeing a mistake and after makeing a lot of mistakes I learned to focus on the good notes that are waiting to be played, just tear off the rear view mirror and pick.
