In the article on the new Collings, it says that it has a "floating pick guard." How are these attached?

I don't know about the Collins in particular, but usually a floating pickguard attaches with two small screws to the side of the neck. This is as opposed to a full pickguard that attaches to the side of the neck AND has a bracket on the side of the body.
