Finally had my mando looked at by a professional and had bridge adjusted and frets checked. He said my string height was 3/32", he said he could bring it down to 2/32" but would have to alter the bridge as it was adjusted as low as it could go. I decided for the time being to leave it as is. Just curious what is considered high/low. I do have trouble with fretting chords and fretting at the first fret, but this is probably from inexperience.

Thanks in advance. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

In my limited experience, hard fretting on the first fret would indicate the nut is a bit high, but I would think the professional you visited would have noted a high nut. One quick way to determine if the nut is too high is to fret a string between the 2nd and 3rd fret, there should be very little to almost no clearence where the string passes over the first fret. Check each string the same.

I have my G at the 12th fret set at 4/64 and 3/64 on E. This is considered low. This is were I like it and I have no buzz. Probably losing a little volume, but it is not that much to notice. ( Oh yes I might add there that 3/32 is equal to 6/64).
