Hi all,
Busy at work today on this new case design. FIRST, let me say, http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif it's tan and not pink like the picture makes it look.
The ribs are maple, the hollows are filled with 1" padding. The knobs on the bottom are ebony.
Handsewn indeed.

Enjoy.

Looks great Brian! The piccolo looks snug as a bug in a rug.

does the top have bracing on it? how will it protect the piccolo? lookls great though i suppose its probbably more of an antique gold colour eh? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Interesting, Brian. Is it more of a gig bag than a case? I, too, wonmder about the top protection.

The top is not "braced," nor is the back. Let me present an analogy that might be very fitting here. When driving a mid-60's Volkswagen bus ("strapped to the front like an Aztec sacrifice") with one lap seatbelt, mediocre drum brakes, etc, you won't run any red lights or speed now will you? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

yes, I'd consider it mostly a gig bag.

thinking of it, remembering back to old Woodstock footage, I remember I saw Ravi Shankar get out of a plane with his sitar in what looked like a rolled up carpet... He kept it safe in his lap for the journey no doubt.......

Old Timer,

I know just what you mean, I have been driving VW Buses for years http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I like the semi-structured gig bag approach... kind of in between a gig bag and a case...One does weary of shlepping around all those heavy black cases!

I also like how you shaped it... at first I wasn't sure why you didn't make it fit the form of the mando all the way around... then I saw it was so the whole thing would sit flat on that edge. Clever. Might be worth adding a little wedge of padding in the gap there...

you could call it a gig case, hows the pic sound by the way, sure looks nice, is it tuned an octave above a mandolin or a mandola?

neither soft nor hard...kind of "al dente" ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

John... the piccolo is an octave above a mandola (I asked Brian last week...)

Brian...do you still have those audio clips of it?

When driving my bus I always kept my seatbelt unbuckled, my theory was I would rather be thrown through the windshield than be strapped to the front with no way to move http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'm secure in my manhood and I think it would look nice in pink.
