I am not attending the Mandolin Symposium (wish I was) nor am I an advanced player (wish I was)... but read that those that are have the opportunity for one-on-one sessions with Grisman, Thile, OR Marshall.

I take that to mean that you choose one of the above. #I don't know myself who I'd choose and in what order, but I thought it'd be interesting to hear what others think. #Especially those that might have had sessions with the masters in the past.

I suppose I'd go 1) Gris 2) Marshall 3) Thile

Do the non-advanced attendees get the opportunity for one-on-one sessions with the other instructors at the symposium?

I am going but unforturnatley I am not an advanced player I"m just delighted at the oppurtunity to go. Well since it was Thile's playing that got me to pick up the mando in the first place, it would definetly be him. My second would be Marshall and third Grisman. I just really don't think you could go wrong with any choice you make. With a line up like that you can't go wrong. Thats like choosing between Godiva chocolate or Lindor chocolate, it's all good.

I've played with Chris a couple times he's super cool and, I've sort of played with Mike ...Well........Mike ,Ondra Holoubek ,Me ,my dad ,and a few others were on stage after the #Mike Marshall Chris Thile show in Vermont ,and I played Mikes mando , I played for him but not exactly with him #( so that's the story ). If I were going to the Symposium (not that I wouldn't love to play with Chris or Mike again ) but, I would really like to meet Radim Zenkl , and David Grisman I find some of the things that they do very interesting , and it would be a great experience . Its a major inspirational boost believe me . But heck I'd love it to play with anyone of the instructors . Like Christine said ... Its all good. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I'm with Christine -- Thile first....it'd be a toss-up between the other two...Ah well, I don't really have to worry about wrestling with that dilemma anyway, rank beginner that I am.... # Really like that chocolate comparison too----(mmmmmm, Godiva...) #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #

see ya in August --4.5 months and counting!

Grisman for sure...I've actually only seen Thile on video (Woodsongs) but where he's at, isn't where Im going to. I also love everything I've heard of Mike Marshalls but I think me and Grisman would click a little better.

Mike Marshall is the bigger musical mind, in my humble yet biased opinion. I'm looking forward to gleening as much music sense from him as possible. The others are a toss up for their obvious mandolin wizardry, but MM is the total package.

Again, that's just my opinion and would love the opportunity to be proved wrong.

Joy to all,
Ken

Ken -

I'm with you! I was fortunate enough to grab some sporadic lessons from MM over about a two year period and can tell you for sure that in addition to playing things that would tie square knots in the knuckles of most mortals, Mike is a *great* teacher with lots of patience.

This is certainly **not** a slight against Chris or the Dawg ... I'd kill to learn some things from them too but from experience, Mike is a *great* teacher!!

You know, with a choice of teachers like the symposium presents talking about who you'd like to learn from is almost akin to asking 'how would you like the million dollars you just won, cash, wire transfer to your account, gold, or platinum?' http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Who cares??!! just give it to me!

Wayne, I agree also. Wouldn't mind a lesson from you!
