I make homemade chocolates mostly around Xmas, but sometimes "just because" for my friends and family. I have cameo moulds, sea horses, peanut butter cups, but no mandolins. Does anybody know of any craft supply companies that sell musical instrument candy moulds? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

What are candy molds made of? Are they something you can make yourself?

well usually they are tin or aluminium molds that are deeply stamped with a design, that the chocolate will take on after its poured in. it really isn't possible to make your own, unless she wanter to make just the shape/outline and nix the design. i don't know of any candy company that does that, google it.

Hey Debbie here's a company that sells them for $135.00 for a mandolin chocolate mold. Kinda steep if ya ask me!

Maybe so, Jim. But I bet she could get her buck-thirty-five back on the cafe classifieds around Christmass time! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Imagine how much that mold would cost if it had a strap hanger.:p

Thanks everyone. Most of my moulds are made of plastic. That metal one looks like it could be "life sized". I wonder how many pounds of chocolate I would have to melt down to make that buddy! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Mandodebbie,
Do an internet search for Michael Bonne, I am sure he could make you one.

I have TWO antique chocolate molds similar to to metal one above AND a 100 year+ old mandolin ice cream mold. I tried using the chocolate molds twice, but didn't have any luck at getting the finished product out in one piece. It is definately an art. I'll try to post a picture sometime. They cost me about $100 apiece several years ago.

Aren't molds that come into contact with food supposed to be made of a special material? At least that's what I remember.. A school I know wanted to make their own candy bar molds and it took the teacher awhile to find a source for food-grade silicone.

Yep, you're probably right - I wondered about that, too. It was the only one I found with a mando, though. However, the ad does say that the sellers make the molds themselves and do custom work as well, so it might be an avenue worth pursuing...
