Don Stiernberg along with Howard Levy (Piano / Harmonica), Aaron Weinstein (Violin), Jim Cox on the Bass, and Curt Morrison (Rythm Guitar); will be playing at the Glendora Ballroom, 10225 S. Harlem Ave, in Chicago Ridge, IL (near south-west suburbs of Chicago) from 2pm to 5:30pm on Sunday, July 17th. Brought to you by the Illiana Club of Traditional Jazz. Tickets $15 at the door.

I'm sure hoping nothing gets in the way of me getting to this concert, I missed the last time he played here.

Howard Levy is a great musician, and most folks here know about Mr. Stiernberg. I'm going to try and make it to this gig.

Anybody know how far this is from (Chicago) Midway airport?
This would be worth flying in to see. Recommendation for nearby hotel?

Ted,
It's only about 8 miles from Midway airport. The main entrance to Midway is on Cicero Avenue, a major north/south street. Harlem Avenue, where the Glendora house is, is also a major north/south street about 3 miles west of Cicero. There is a Hilton hotel in Oak Lawn about 4 miles south of Midway on Cicero at 95th street, don't know the area that well, but I'm sure there are other hotels too.

Yeah, Southwest Airlines has a deadline of 14 days prior (for the "Fun Fare") & I missed it.
Plus I have a gig conflict.
Anybody going, please take notes for me...

Yes yes, please take notes (all 12). http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif A set list would be cool.
I'd put money on two predictions: 1) he plays "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," 2) he does not play "Yardbird Suite." http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

So how was the show?

Daniel,
It was great, of course, how could it not be? There were actually a couple of glitches, but Don and crew adapted and in my opinion pulled it off well. Biggest problem was the sound system. This organization usually has big band and traditional jazz with horns and woodwinds and just couldn't seem to get the strings miked well. So the first set was a struggle but by the beginning of the second set Don had compensated pretty well by sharing a mike with the fiddle player. This made it a more interesting show to watch also. Even tho these guys had played together in various combinations it wasn't a highly rehearsed show, much more of a jam session, so it was pretty spontaneous which was also fun to see. Would have like to hear more mandolin from Aaron Weinstein, but his fiddle playing was great. Don played mostly mandolin (his Grand Artist), but did play guitar on two (I think) songs. He has a great stage presence, very relaxed and natural, and funny. Musically it was a lot of Django and Django like stuff, but also other traditional jazz pieces. Here's a list of most of what they played but I'm missing a few of the pieces. Minor Swing, Nuages, Pennies From Heaven, If I Had You, Douce Ambiance, Three Little Words, Limehouse Blues, The Castle of My Dreams, Swing 39, Assanhado (Jacob de Bandolim), Let's Get Lost, I've Got Rhythm, Sentimental Mood, Stars Fell on Alabama, San Antonio Rose, Where or When, Back Home in Indiana, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Belleville
So anyhow, despite the sound problems, a great show and even stole some ideas from Don that I want to try in my lead playing.

Thanks Ken,
Sounds like a great show. If I recall correctly (and I may not) Aaron Weinstein was playing violin with John Jorgenson in the early part of the year. This would explain the emphasis on the Django catalog.
We're leaning on DS to get some gigs in the Bay Area. His Mandolin Symposium connections (Dawg and Mike Marshall at least) should point him in the right direction to getting out this-a-way. I'm hoping that happens sooner rather than later.
Best,
Daniel

The sound was a little strange. For some reason the harmonica was coming from behind the audience the whole time. The guitar was very quiet through the whole show.

Don and Dawg performed Douce Ambiance at the Symposium, which was great. This Django tune is also covered in Don's jazz column in the current issue of Mandolin Magazine. I need to learn that one.

In a Sentimental Mood and They Can't Take That Away From Me are on Don and John Carlini's Angel Eyes. The latter really swings! I've been bitten by the jazz bug since the Symposium. Let's see if some of it will rub off on my playing http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Withak, I agree, the hamonica mike was always too hot and overpowered everything else and the guitar mike was to quiet, except it seems like they brought it up for the last couple songs.
