I really enjoy The Lights of Home off of Bela Fleck's Drive (along with every other song on Drive of course). Jerry has a great dobro solo and sets the mood... Sam has a wonderful mandolin solo, BUT Tony Rice absolutely steals the show with his little pickup going into his guitar solo. This is at 1:58 of the song and gives me goose bumps EVERY time I hear it. Hate to give props to guitar in the mandolin forum, but for some reason those couple seconds sound incredible to me.

Anybody else notice this?

I think it's very interesting how just a few notes can totally make a song.

I mentioned Bela/Tony on another thread ; I have a TR CD ("Bluegrass Instrumentals" - I think!) that has a number from THAT session. In the booklet that accompanies the CD - for THAT instrumental, Tony say's (paraphrasing):"... working with Bela..., is very challanging.." - or words to that effect! I think the number is "Whitewater" - I don't have the CD in-front of me presently(I'm at work!##) - Anyhow..., THEY SMOKE!!! - Listening to it while driving can/could be hazardous to you health - or, those on the road with you!! - Cheers! - Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

"Drive" has my all-time favorite mando break. #I think it's the 2nd tune (slipstream?). #Sam's lead just has all of the elements. #You really get the feeling all of the players were pushing each other to great heights.

Drive is a wonderful recording, but I think it's Sammy who steals the show on The Open Road. That opening mando riff is a classic!

I feel the same way about a lick Bryan Sutton plays half way through Chris Thile's Raining At Sunset. It's only a few notes but it makes the tune. He did it again on the Mark O'Connor Retrospective album with his (much longer) break on Flight Home.

And I agree that the mando break on Slip Stream is awesome...I've found the tab on mandozine, and one day I will be able to play it!

Oh, yeah... the opening to The Open Road is excellent.

Really, the most impressive thing on that album is Sam's chop. THAT is how I want to sound!

Does anyone have the melody of this tune written down in any form? Really like this melody (Lights of Home). Any chance someone has this written out or know where I can find it?

much obliged.

Really, the most impressive thing on that album is... the whole thing! Seriously, though, Sam's chop is an irresistible force. It's one of the things that really got me into playing mandolin. If I could play rhythm like Sam, I don't think I'd ever want to play lead at all.

Another guitar highlight is the ending of Slavek Hanzlick's solo on Emory Lester's "Pale Rider". It's a great cut, fantastic composition and playing by Emory but the last few notes of that guitar break get me every time. As delicate and intriguing as a spider web in the rain.

"Drive" is one of my very favourite of Bela Fleck's recordings. EVERY track is a gem !.I've long used it in the past as a 'pick along' CD for my Banjo playing, now that i'm in 'Mandolin mode' i'm still using it the same way - "Up & Around The Bend" ( the "U-Bend" tune) is one of the warm-up tunes that i play every day & "Whitewater" really gets a move on - wonderful stuff,
