I really enjoy "Mexican Stomp" from Blugrass Mandolin Extravaganza. Does anyone know where I may find the tab to this song? Thanks

I think it's nearly impossible to learn one of Frank's tunes from tab. Use Transcribe! software and slow it down and learn it a few notes at a time. Don't get me wrong, I read music and tab, but it's a very rewarding experience to use your ear to learn a tune, especially when that's how Frank would teach it to you if you took a lesson from him.

That tune throws everyone on the B part, it's quirky, like Frank http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

It's fun to watch him playing it on the videos from his website.

...yea try twinning it with him...I was the lucky guy back in the late 80's to have to do that with him on stage...lol....great experience....he used to come to my house ever so often and we would work out harmony parts to alot of his songs...

Frank has taught me that tune a few times, the B part is hard. The rythym is shall we say, Frank's own time signature. Anyhow, I basically have it down, not quite as hard as it sounds. If I get the time soon and remember, I'll record it real slow and send it to you...

Thanks. That would really help. I am trying to listen to the song slowed down with Transcribe and some of the parts sound muddled.

Ya' want the tab in "standard" notation, Frank's notation, or the original one - in Spanish!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif - Kinda' like a Mexican interpretation of Bluegrass Stomp!(sorry, I coldn't pass it up. hee.. hee..). http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Now, the deal with that B part is that it is
a call and response, like Bach did in his solo
violin pieces. Think of the original run, then
an echo coming back off of a wall or a canyon.

daaaa de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)

da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)

da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da de yada da, (da de ya de da)
da da da

See? That's not that hard. :-)

I hear ya moose, sounds great... I almost thought I was listening to Frank himself... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The B-Part melody as Jimbo pointed out is not the tuffest part, but playing rythym on the piece!? Man...Jeeze...

Speaking of rhythm on that piece.....Frank is just hardcore on his rhythm parts....super awesome. It almost seems like Grisman is kind of hesitant when it's his turn on rhythm.

That tune is a real gem.

Yes, it is true, playing rhythm in this band takes
special training. It is not that it is hard, but
it can be hard to grasp for a lot of folks. I was busy
torturing a bass player here in a recording session last
night. I think it is important to see the big picture,
the total tune and not only the individual parts, because
the individual parts make up this greater sound in tunes
like Mexican Stomp.

And as always, one should be thinking
(one e an da, two e an da...) etc.
