View Full Version : F4 NUT

On my last mandolin (F4) I used the string spacing suggested by Siminoff, taken from a vintage Gibson F4.
The F4 neck is wider than a F5 and so is the string spacing.
Question: It plays and sounds fine, but I DO prefer the string spacing closer as on my F5's. Would it be "kosher" to re-do a new nut on my F4 with F5 string spacing??
Or since it is a F4, should I leave it? I can play it fine the way it is, but when I switch back to my F5 it just feels right and I can play cleaner and faster.
Not sure if there is a proper "protocal" in regard to string spacing, kinda like a classical guitar has spacing way wider than a steel string and it is supposed to be that way. SO what would you do? Not planing on selling this one either. JD

Make it playable for yourself, it doesn't sound like you're going for strict authenticity, and why should you unless that is your goal?

Even though it's an F4-styled mandolin there is no reason you shouldn't make any changes to suit yourself. After all it has your name on it instead of Lloyd's. (And it's a beauty as well as I recall from the pictures you posted.)Since you made it yourself and want to keep it think of the changes as custom building for your client.

Thanks Guys, you talked me into it. I guess if I don't like it, for some unknown reason, I can put the old one back on. JD
