Bill Monroe recorded it many years ago, although I forget what key he was in. #Probably 'B' or 'B flat' because the vocals were high as I recall. #It sounds OK in 'A' too; easy chords, the vocals don't kill ya, and it's a good key for working up an instrumental break starting with some tremelo picking on the open 'A' and 'E' strings.
A # # # # # # G # # # # # # # # A
See that train comin' down the track

Carryin' the one that I love

Her beautiful body is still here on Earth

But her soul has been called up above.

That's how she loved me, with body and soul.
Lonesome tune. #Plum pitiful, almost!
Hey Pathfinder! - Thanks for the words - always loved that tune, I learned it from Monroe's version. Also recorded by the Gents - years ago(with Duffy's great tenor work!)- Great and "powerful" song. Who was the writer(!??):D
Moose, Would you believe none other than Virginia Stauffer?

I have 'worked it up' in E or F; it is one of my fave Monroe songs.

Hey Evan! - not tryin' to hyjack this thread, but one of the most "poignant", haunting and beautiful of Big Mon's numbers is the one about "...when the leaves start to fall in autumn, and... ; there's an old, old man who walks in the garden.." If that don't move ya'...., yer DEAD!! Some beautiful fiddle work that'll give me "goosebumps" every time. Moose. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think Seldom Scene also did a version that was my introduction to this song. I remember there was a Dobro solo and mandolin solo, so I think that's right.
As I remember, they did it slower and keyed way down from Monroe's original, like in D (dropped D on guitar) or E, and also threw in a IV chord in the verse, which I like, eg,
D # # # # # # C # # # #D
See that train comin' round the bend

Carryin' the one that I love

You must be talking about the "Old, Old House" #Moose. Sing it with me now.
There's an old, old house
that once was a mansion
On a hill overlooking the town
But time has left a wreckage
Where once there was beauty
And soon the old house will tumble down
But when the leaves start to fall in autumn
And the raindrops drip from the trees
There's an old old man
Who walks in the garden
And his head is bowed in memories
They say he built the mansion for the love of a woman
They planned to be married in the fall
But her love for him faded in the last days of summer
And the house stands empty after all
GVD!: That's the ONE!! - Thank You! - I'm gonna fix a BIG ONE tonite an' say "...to a beautiful song.., an' to my buddies at the CAFE." We few, we happy few... Monroe sure had fun with 'The Old, Old House'...
He would do long sappy into's to it and then sometimes do falsetto parts...
Believe it is a George 'Possum' Jones song.....

And, since no one else has corrected this, the correct title of the song which the thread is about is: "WITH Body and Soul".... just like the 'album'....
Harumph!
Bask in IT, Evan..! - You are correct!(as usual ; hee... hee..) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

yeah Evan and then cry at the end and really act like it was sad. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif It was kinda weird to me. Made me feel like I was at a funeral of someone I didn't know. I guess that's just Bill Monroe.

Whenever I hear anyone say something critical about Bill Monroe's singing, I want to put "With Body and Soul" on, and tell them, "If that doesn't touch you, you're either dead, or someone should shoot you now and put you out of my misery."
There's a song that I think Alice Gerrard sings that I have heard was written by Monroe but he never recorded it. I can't remember the name of it. Anyone know what I'm talking about. It's a killer.

Hey Evan,
If I was anywhere near you, you wouldn't be able to get rid of me. Unfortunately (in that respect), I was all the way across the state, in Wrightsville Beach, most of the time. We went down 95 from NY and were in Fayettenam for a couple of days, then fled East. I thought about you (and other fine Cafe'ers who live in the wonderful Tar Heel State).
The good news is, my wife *loved* North Carolina, and wants to go back. (She's even talking about buying a house on the beach there.) So...there will be a next time. You better start child-proofing now.
