Hey all, I got an email from Peterson marketing their new software strob tuner. Any see or tried it yet, it is supposed to have the.1 cent accuracy and the deluxe version has a o scope and I think a wave form analysis program? Might be a worth while investment? John

Hey, I checked out the website, looks like a good product. Do you think this is useful in using for tap-tuning when building a mandolin?

You know before I found this site I found the first Siminoff book. I was convinced if I wanted to build a good mando I had to tap tune. Then low and behold my wife bought me a 590 for Christmas. I love it but have since learned that tap tuning is really just a ball park estimate. I have learned from the pros hear there are other ways to check your plates but that human touch is still probably the best indicator. Only problem is that takes experience. I would with this knowledge not buy an expensive strob but if tap tuning is what you want to do I think this program would be a great cheap alternative especially the deluxe model with the extra bells and whistles. O scope and spectrum analyzer are the only reasons I am considering it. Of course a good search of the web would probably find some cheaper or even share ware versions of both. Like the pros have said, repeatedly, if you want to build just do it and take your time and pay attention and you'll be fine. There are a whole lot of skills other then tap tuning that are much more important so go slow. All of that said I love my strob and will probably buy this just for the extra bells and whistles eventually. John http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Wow, $80 for the deluxe is extremely reasonable.

I'm confused. What do you get? Just the software, I presume. Can you use any mike for input or do you need something special? How does it capture the sound input to it?

John,
Thanks for your reply on tap-tuning. Lots of good info there. I got one of those A-5 kits and have yet to start on it. The Siminoff book that came with it mentioned using a strobe tuner for tap- tuning. This will be my first build- so I'm looking for all the advise I can get.

This thread prompted me to go look for just a plain-old software tuner. I found a shareware program (forget which one; it's on the home computer) and gave it a try. It reads note +- cents. I checked my intonation with it.
Question: about how close should you get in cents checking intonation at the twelve fret?
I think most of my strings were within a few, one or two were maybe just under 10. Seemed like there was enough various in reading that getting it under a few would be just about impossible.

Hey all. Teri your welcome, Bobd I use a mic but I still haven't purchased this software. I'm using three different tuners. I have an intellitouch for travel. I have a 590 autostrobe for home and travel if I'm driving and The tuner that comes in garage band. I run a mac and the garage band tuner seems to work better then the intellitouch. I would have to say it is close to the strobe but have never done a direct comparison. kvk that question is better left to the pro's I can't touch it and do it justice. John

G-Tune works great, and it's free. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
