I was curious being a Weber Big Sky player why I don't see more mention of them? Where do they fall in the never ending mandolin debate? I see lost of posts where folks play Weber Ferns, but not Big Skys. I think folks even play more Yellowstones than Big Skys.

To my knowledge the only differences between the Fern and Big Sky are Tone Bar - X Brace, and the peghead inlay. Earlier Big Sky's have the celtic inlay like mine instead of dots which I would have prefrred.

My Big Sky is an excellent mandolin that I enjoy. Just curious why I don't hear more about them.

I almost bought a Big Sky. However, I didn't care for the postion markers and the overall color of the mandolin. I wanted to get the Fern but it was out of my range. In the end it was the tone that made me pick my Yellowstone. Although I really would have went for a Fern with some block inlays....

I was also thinking about the big sky when I was looking a few years ago. # But the Fern just did it for me. #I think the big sky is a great mandolin and it was top of the line for a while. #I just like the Fern just because it's so darn cool! # Mine plays like glass, #has the bass I want but dang, #it is just so darn pretty. #Also the tone bar thing was what I really wanted. # But I must tell you, #if I had to do it all over again I think I would go for the Yellowstone with tonebars. #A very cool and pretty mandolin...just not as fancy. #The problem with the fern is that folks expect you to play how it looks!!! #I love my Fern. #Nick http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
