My wife and I have a couple (no pay) gigs this summer. #There will mostly be middle aged to retirement age folks attending. #We've played for these folks before and they liked us enough to ask us back. #
# We previoulsy played a mix of blues and Gospel and want to mix in a couple summer songs or just plain fun songs. #Possibly Summertime if one of us can sing it well enough. #What songs would you suggest? # #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Jack

Hate to say it, but any of the Buffet stuff is good and easy. (Here on the coast we hate to play it, but it pays the bills) Jamaican Farewell is another good one and works well on the mando. J
Ain't nothing wrong with Buffett (see the sign-off...tee hee)...but I have played nursing homes and Hank Williams goes over great..."Hey Good Looking" (cover by JB)..."There's a Tear in My Beer"...ect...something about those songs that make me think about that summer off between grades...
summer in the city is fun (actually most lovin spoonful is)...
we also do goodnight irene (yeah, i know depressing lyrics-but fun tune) and people seem to love that during our outdoor/summer shows

John Prine's "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian" and "Please Don't Bury Me" are both crowd pleasers in the polite company I keep. Funny songs, not summer songs.

Thank you for the good suggestions. I think for this middle age to elderly audience I will add a couple Hank Williams songs that I already know; probably 'Move It On Over' for sure. I think for that a learning a couple Jimmy Buffet songs would be great 'standbys'. And I love John Prines 'Please Don't Bury Me', never could do it to suit myself. May try again. Thanks! Jack

Second the Lovin' Spoonful, but my favorite summer song is Daydream (http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/daydream.htm). It provides a bit of comic relief when I get to the whistling part, though. #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
With the right audience, encouraging participation in the whistling choruses can be a blast (I was part of a small audience trying this once). But be forewarned - it is really hard to strum, whistle and belly laugh all at the same time...

"In the Summertime" Mungo Jerry
In the summertime
when the weather is high
you can stretch right up
an' touch the sky
when the weather's fine
you got women
you got women on your mind...
