I guess I was REAL bored one day, so I took my icon editor and made some mandolin cursors to replace Windows' boring arrow. I figured I'd post them here for everyone's enjoyment. (What better way to surf on MandolinCafe than with your favorite mandolin as a pointer?!)
The attached .zip file includes these cursors:
- f5.cur - Sunburst f-style
- f5_wait.cur - Sunburst F with small hourglass
- f9.cur - solid brown F style
- guitar.cur - Dreadnought guitar
- guitwait.cur - Dreadnought guitar with small hourglass
- blonde.cur - Blond F-style mando, like Jesse's Stiver
- banjo.cur - Open-back 5-string b*njo
- banjowait.cur - Open-back 5-string b*njo with small hourglass
To change your cursor in Windows XP:
1. Click the Start button
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click on Mouse
4. On the Pointers tab, in the Customize section, highlight Normal Select and click Browse.
5. Select the mando cursor of your choice.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 but select "Working in Background", and then select a matching "wait" cursor...
BTW, the "hot spot" on these cursors are always the top upper left point on the headstock... Let me know if you want me to post an A5, A9 (already made them) or any oval-holes...
Let me know what you think, or if there are any better ones out on the web that I can use!
Enjoy! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks a lot. I like the new pointer, only now when I go to the control panel and try to access he pointers, I get an error message saying that the pointer select file is either corupted or missing. What have you done to my control panel?

Jim:
I tried it from scratch on my PC, and everything is fine. You must have done something weird when assigning the cursors... If in doubt, you can always click the "Use Default" button to reset everything to the standard arrow cursors.

this may be a really dumb question, and I'm fully prepared to accept that, but could you make a pointer that rotates the mando, guitar, and a fiddle? Is that even possible? Those are what I play and I would love to have a pointer that shows all 3.

I will try and make a fiddle icon, and then I think I can make an animated cursor that morphs between mando, guitar, and fiddle... I'm not sure I can pull it off, but I'll see what I can do as time allows!
Glad everyone is enjoying these pointers!

Thanks, the details on these are quite good. It's the only F5 I can afford.

I can't make them work on my computer. It can't open them. When I try to change through the control panel, it just doesn't recognize the files, even if it recognizes other .cur files. Strange! Do you have any ideas? I use Windows XP. I have lots of other cursors but would love to have one with a mandolin!!!!!

Hi all,
We're back online here following a couple days of computer trauma. One effect the repairs had was to default my cursor back to the oh so boring white arrow instead of the F5 I downloaded courtesy of Brian and this thread way back when. I swapped it back in as quickly as i could, these little things still crack me up.
So I thought I'd bump this thread up for anyone who missed 'em the first time around. Check 'em out, they're a riot. Looks like the download file is still active and the price is certainly right.
BTW, one thing I do that Brian didn't mention is use the blonde for my link select, so when I cover a hot link my F5 morphs into the blonde and I never have to see the Pillsbury doughboy hand.

Jason, you must need to download WinZip. Go to winzip.com. It'll unzip the files.

Oh, I just noticed the A9 file is a single .cur file (cursor file). Click on the download link, then click Save, then save it in: C:WINDOWS/Cursors
