Well I have a 1/4 inch router bit will it be ok to cut my slot that wide or is a 1/4 inch to wide.

How big is the rod? If it's 3/16", and if your router bit it round on the end, it'll work.
If it's square on the end, the corners of the slot will be a little closer to the surface of the back of the neck, and the rod might have the opportunity to move side to side in the slot and possibly rattle.

I got a 3/16" spiral bit to do my slots. They're longer than the standard bits and can get the depth you need for a traditional rod. I use an old Craftsman table and fence the neck while it's still square on both sides and then I use wood screws near the nut in the part that will be cut away to raise up the front to get a progressively deeper cut towards the back.In other words, the screw heads are like skids that hold the nut end up while making a pass.
Most 2-way rods are 1/4" if you want to go that route.

Wood screws! Adjustable!
I've been superglueing on a little shim and have to make and measure something to use from time to time, and then remember where I put the stock when I need it. Screws might be quicker, I'll have to try that. Thanks for the idea.

OK guys the truss rod is 3/16 and the router bit is square at the end.Maybe I`m confused thinking that a slightly bigger slot would make it less likely to rattle?

That would make it more likely to rattle. You want a snug fit. Wrap it with tape or heat shrink it.

I use a drinking straw over the rod, heavily parafin the threads, and then make sure some glue gets down in there. I've never had one rattle using this method.

I bed the whole works and jerks (including the filler strip with slow setting epoxy. If you sleeve the rod with heat shrink tubing, the epoxy will not "lock" the rod in place. You won't get any rod noise with this method. A better method would be to forget the adjustable rod altogether and install a strip of carbon fibre.
