When I got my first mando about a year ago, my dog Scout would leave the room or have a runnin' fit whenever I played it.
After about 6 months, either I got a little more tolerable, or she got a little more tolerant cause now she hangs out. She even seems to like Gardenia Waltz.
That is until I got one of the new national resophonic mandos. This thing is LOUD and she's back to leavin' the room!
Anyone else have pet (or other) problems when playin?

Hey Ducati, just for fun, run to the music store and purchase a complete set of metal fingerpicks for your right hand. I tried doing that with my Dobro mandolin and the tone is rather amazing; and wonderfully bizarre. Of course, I would not attempt this with a wooden topped mandolin for fear of scratches.

I'll be at a music store tonight. I'll pick some up and see what happens. I'm a little concerned the dog might never recover though.

We have three cats...two of them like to hear mandolin and guitar...the third well she is scared of pretty much everything. #The two that appear to like the sounds will even come up and lay right by me. #Which is more than I can say for the wifey http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif. #She says I sound good, but is usually in the other room with the TV on....

Hehe, you have a dog called Scott that's afraid of the mandolin.
My dog howls when I play the resonator. He falls peacefully asleep if I play the snakehead. Go figure

When I play mando or guitar the cats can care less and the dogs usually lay at my feet.
Now I'm trying to teach myself to play fiddle and the cats scatter and my oldest dog (13yr old lab mix) stays in the room moaning and whining as though in pain.
Ooh, but that resonator mandolin....
I'll have to talk to the MRS. about that!

My ex-racing greyhound, disturbed from her 22 hour a day nap, gave me dirty look once during a practice session and then left the room in disgust. I think she's gone deaf or used to the mando now.

My dog is a husky and that stinker will come to where ever I'm playing lay down and groan. Not sing but really groan like he is in pain. I told him if he didn't like it to go to a different room. He groaned louder after that. I must really stink. John http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Animals (especially canines) are awesome, I love hearing about other people's pets...much the way parents love to hear about each other's children!
MY dog, a black lab, could honestly care less about my playing.
She is, however, spoiled musically. Many a great concert or festival has she been to, so I'm sure my humble beginnings can't compare with the terrific musicians we have seen...
Now my girlfriend's dog, complete opposite...She is a chihuahua, and TERRIFIED of most instruments...guitars make her cower, but not the mando.
Perhaps it is the size, or the lyrical tones of the mandolin, but that little pup just loves to hear me play.
Of course, the wee one usually stays home from shows, so quite possibly she has no clue just how inept I am....:D
Both dawgs are equally puzzled by my lady's new fiddle though

My cats didn't seem to care if I play mandolin, guitar, or even the banjo. They would however leave the room as soon I picked up the fiddle case. Lately I must be getting better at the fiddle, they don't leave as soon or often as before.

When I first started, Scout would have a runnin fit and bark. I used to do the song project here on the cafe, and I've got a recording of Cherokee Shuffle with Scout "accompanying" me. It's a hoot.

Neither of our cats seem to care about my Mandy, but our one cat always jumps on my lap, meowing at me, when I play my harmonica or ocarina. Now I just need to figure out if he's approving or complaining!
