Saw 2 great mandolin acts this weekend at the festival.

Thursday night I just happened to catch Tony Williamson sitting in with Big Fat Gap trading licks with Chris Heany.
Tony was in fine form and always seems to play something cool and unusual in the framework of traditional music.
Chris was great too.

Sunday I saw Nickel Creek. I was up front leaning on the stage close enough to touch Sarah and Chris. Their performance was a case study in dynamics, subtle interplay, fine musicianship and fun. I was so jazzed went home and practiced till my fingers hurt.

Yeah, I caught those shows as well at Shakori. Great little festival, although the weather was a bit *challenging*. #Tony did a great show with his band on Saturday and Charles Pettee did some nice mando work Sunday a.m. as well. But, as you pointed out, Thile was amazing!

Festival was in Silk Hope, NC at the Shakori Grassroots Festival, which takes place each spring and again in the fall.

Suggest you get on their email list. That's usually how I hear about it. You can find their site if you Google "Shakori Hills".

They've had some good regional bands and some big acts like Patty Loveless, Del McCoury and now Nickel Creek. There is another one the first part of October, same place.

I was there on Sunday. Filled in for the bass player in Fescue 911 playing for the Apple Hill Cloggers. Shakori Hills is a great place and lots of fun. It's not a "traditional" bluegrass festival but there is plenty of bluegrass there as well as folk, native, Irish/Celtic, and so on. Great place to visit!

thats a great festival...its sort of the 'alternative' (pun intended) to the high dollar MerleFest.
