I was looking through my old worn copy of Jack Tottle's "Bluegrass Mandolin" and was wondering who these folks are? #Did the young kid with the 70's Gibson/Ibanez go on to do great mando things? #Just curious.

I think the kid with the string tie is Arnie Solomon? I'm probably wrong.:O
'tis indeed Arnie. The black man with the F-5 is 'Big Drill', a fine mando picker/dentist from the Boston area.

I thought the BIG guy was Vince Gill(top left). He use to be ,as they say around these parts, "good size". I don't know who Tidwell is. Please fill me in.
Arnie Solomon is awesome. He is one of my heroes.

The guy on the upper left looks a lot like Wally Friedrichs who hailed from the Chicagoland area (Evanston, Illinois) to be precise. He played the banjo in a band called the Calumnet and Sag city River Valley Boys with Paul Ostroff and Andy Sachar. Andy played the washtub bass and then the mandolin.
But I could be wrong...

It's Richie Brown for sure. I have this book and always thought the big guy was Bobby Osborne! He was pretty chubby back in MGM / WWVA days.

Well 2 out of 4 ain't bad not that it matters one iota. I have always been curious who nameless folks in photos are. Kind of like in Casablanca whwn Bogie says to Ingrid Bergman; "Who are you really, and what were you before? What did you do, and what did you think?"
I had never heard of Dr. Richie Brown before. Now I've checked him out and he sounds like quite a player! Same goes for Arnie Soloman.
I was curious if Arnie Soloman's mando is a Gibson, Ibanez or Alvarez? I think they all had the same inlay. At least GIbson/Ibanez did.
I did some pickin wih Richie and folks at Mando Camp North. He also played a few tunes during the instructors concerts. Very nice man.

Hello Guys,
I went to college with Arnie Solomon, which was a real treat since he played around town and campus quite a bit! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Though in those days he played banjo in a bluegrass band, so he played banjo more than mandolin even though it was not his main instrument. He can play amazing banjo too! Dave Bromberg came to town for a concert once and about halfway through the concert he mentioned that he had a buddy that played mandolin and he brought him out. Sure enough it was Arnie and everyone went nuts!
I contacted Arnie to find out if he was the kid in Tottles book. Indeed it is Arnie! He stated that it was taken at the Philadelphia Folk Festival when he was 12 or 13. They hired him as a featured performer in the childrens workshop.
Arnie is playing a 1988 Henderson F5 style Mandolin. He did at one point own a Gibson, but sold it as he prefered the Henderson. I did not ask him which mandolin was in the book, but looking at it it sure looks like the Gibson.

That guy in the upper left looks a little like Paul Willaims, with the Jimmy Martin F4.
Isn't Sam Tidwell from the Northeast; Maine, maybe? I always heard Jimmy Gaudreau talk about him.
