This one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7314711624&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1) is an interesting take on an antique, distressed finish - not to mention body shape. At least there IS a scroll on it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I wonder if it has a sound post and typical violin/viola bracing or if it's braced like a mandolin. Interesting concept. BTW, the same #6 is for sale on the luthier's website for $1,300 w/free shipping & case. That'd be the place to buy it, if you were going to. J. Mark Lane....need another new toy? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

There are sound files on his website too. Seems to have some sustain, but might be a little thin (assuming a good recording).

It's kinda cool looking. I'd like to have one just to bring it to the local jam I go to amd watch all the fiddle players faces when I break it out! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I kind of like it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Before being bitten by the mandolin bug I played the violin http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But I think I'll stick with my Flatiron http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Nothing new under the sun, as they say (whoever they are!). Take a look at this "violaline" by Jerome Thibouville Lamy, France, ca. 1920.

There was a Antoniotsai violin mando entered in the Mando tasting this year that didn't sound too bad. As I recall Mike Compton had a little bit of difficulty playing it in the higher registers initially. I don't know if the scale length was shorter or if it was because of a lack of fret markers.
