What kind of case is that in the first pic? looks like a calton handel and plate on it. Could it be the "new" calton we have all been hearing about? Someone please say something!

I think it's a Calton mandola case. If so, it's too bad...could have potential as a nice mandolin case.

Must be for that Brentrup 3 point oval hole......the body is bigger than a reg'lar F5.......I recall him saying here on the Cafe, that Calton made some custom interiors in a dola case to fit the oversized 3 point.
You mean this Brentrup 3 point with the killer back? I think Mr. Kimble likes it too.

If you think it looks good you should have seen who brought it out to us. None other than the killer blues harmonica player Brody Buster.

Close but no c#gar on the builders. All answers must be phrased in the form of an answer not a question. Yes Jim Hilburn was there but for some reason he didn't make the picture which is a shame because he had one excellent sounding A there.
Yeah Jim Baggett and the staff at Mass Street Music know how to do it up right don't they? What a class operation they run there. If you're ever traveling anywhere near there do yourself a favor and stop in.

After seeing these pics, I really wish I could have gone this year. #It looks like a darn fun time! #I cant believe there were that many luthiers of that caliber there. #That speaks volumes about how this site unites the mandolin community. #And I second the compliments of Mass Street Music. #Definitely worth the trip. #But beware, MAS can strike you instantly. #Last time I visited, I wound up with a terrific Davis F5.

I'm not making any guesses on the makers. I know some, haven't met the others. Some are what I consider close friends. But it's a cool group, whether I was there or not. Builders are a unique group of people in the world.
Everybody shares everything. Very cool.
But, Scott and you others- as wonderful as the pictures are, it's not fair! God, I wish I could have gone this year. But it was it was not be this year. I hope next year. So many people I've talked to that I would have enjoyed meeting, to put it mildly.
To be fair (on my side!), thanks Scott and all other picture posters. Ah, to be there. What a magnificent thing. Next year- I'll book it, I hope.!
Hi to my fellow builder/ friends that I didn't have the time to do this this year. Best to all of you.

This was my first year and I can't say enough about how gracious everyone was/is! A dream come true to see and listen and play. So many instruments that I had just heard of and then they were right there in front of me...or even, in some cases, right in my hands. I didn't want to put Will Kimble's mandola down. It was sweet....wish I could play decently. Scott's Nugget just blew me away, hearing Scott and others play it.
Nice to get to put some faces with some handles from here at the cafe.
Did anyone get a picture of the Commodium mando that Ted brought. Nice funky sound. If you play in a jug band you may have to have one. Ted will be doing a review at his website soon, he told us. This may have been the most practical instrument there.
Hey thanks for all who helped put this on but Scott especially went out of his way to make me feel welcome and the folks at Mass Street are beyond description. If they have what I want, musically, they'll be my first stop to buy.
take care

Well the 2005 Mando Fest is over and what an event! Jake Jolliff, Alex Hargreaves and I flew out from the Portland Oregon airport on Wednesday to Kansas City and was met at the airport by Jim Triggs. What a great guy he is. We had a lot to talk about and did. We went to PaPa Keno's for their world famous barbecue pizza and hands down, it's the best pizza I have ever had.
Thursday Scott an took us to Mass Street music. My first visit to a most unique store. What a store! What a crew! If any of you ever get a chance to go to Lawrence Kansas you must go to Mass Street Music. The Jake, Alex and I thought it was very cool and were just drooling over all the Collings mandolins for sale there.
Thursday night as we prepared for the Mandolin Tasting, we wound up with a total of 33 instruments for tasting. Mike Compton was our player for the evening and we were treated to an evening of great sounding instruments all expertly played to bring out the best tone. Mike also gave us some great light moments and treated us to several songs that might appear on the tasting CD. I wish to publicly thank John at Mass Street Music for making sure that we had everything we needed for capturing the tasting on DAT. I enjoyed having so many new instruments from makers that we on the west coast don't get to see and hear for the sampling. You will be amazed at the quality of the instruments we captured and will once and for all put to rest what these instruments sound like. There were a few surprises too but you'll hear those for yourself. We truly live in the golden age of the mandolin.
Our little trio, the Jolliff-Hargreaves Expedition had a chance of a lifetime and that was to have Don Steirnberg rehearse with us Friday afternoon for the Friday evening show. Our mandolin player Jake said to Don, "You're the quickest study new player I've ever worked with!" Well I sure agree, he was just great and we appreciate his stepping in to help us out. Don, would you like to go on the road with us?
Can't say enough about the theatre where all this took place. I do sound all over the Northwest and what I'd give for a place like Liberty Hall. The acoustics are just perfect. We got to see Little Rev, the Uptown Mandolin Quartet and Don Julian and Neptune. We were very honored and humbled to be among the great artists and distinguished persons there for this event.
I urge you all to put it on your list of things to do this next year......go to Lawrence for Mando Fest. It's easy to get there, great places to stay, plenty of great places to eat, a friendly, Liberal college town, and lots to do with the fest. Thanks to Scott and all the sponsors for what you do and for your help. Ken Cartwright

It's taken me a couple of days to come back to earth after MandoFest and I want to publicly thank all of the folks who put this wonderful weekend together. Scott & Annie Tichenor and Jeff & Beth Dearinger clearly put in many hours of work in preparation for the event and it was nothing short of fantastic. Jim Baggett and his devoted staff at Mass Street Music put on the great MandoBrunch that dazzled us all. Ken Cartwright organized the MandoTasting that featured Mike Compton and left most everyone in the audience with a newly-energized case of MAS. Ted Eschliman and Charles Higginson were great MC's and added considerable humor to the concerts.
I'm sure I'll have missed someone and I apologize for that. My general level of exhaustion is my only excuse. One of the things that I love about an event like this is the opportunity to finally meet face to face with folks who have become great friends via email and phone. Lawrence was the center of the mandolin universe for the weekend and I can hardly to go back. Mass Street Music is one of the finest music stores I've ever been in and I urge every mando player to visit them. The performances were nothing short of spectacular and inspiring!!
My Le Domino tenor guitar and my red shoes are pleased to have received so much attention. The shoes are Pirellis if anyone is interested and they corner like you wouldn't believe.
As Cynthia and I were travelling back to Vermont, I pulled a mandolin out of a case in the Philly airport and played for a while as we waited for our flight back to Burlington. Apparently, our stewardess heard me and when I de-planed, she said "You did good! Keep practicing."
With that thought in mind, I'll say again Thank you!!! MandoFest rules!
