I have an inexpensive mandolin that I take camping and would like to scallop out the fretboard extension. Does anyone know of a previous Cafe msg thread or internet site where I can get some direction on how to do this? I have Drimmel tools but want to see just how it is done before I decide to attempt it.
Thanks

Detailed instructions from frets.com (http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Technique/Mandolin/DropTongue/droptongue.html)

Attempt at your own risk: I took the strings off (duh!) and held my cheap Kentucky mando upside down and used the belt part of my belt/disk sander. The round wheel made the scoop curve. You have to use your eye to keep it level, and don't drop the body down onto the belt. I wouldn't do it with an expensive mando, but I worked perfectly.

I pulled the frets and used a dremel with a small sanding wheel on it. Sanded it down to where I wanted it. Then used a file and sandpaper to get a gradual slope to it. Then sanded it clean with 400 grit. Very easy too, about 1.5 hours. #JD

One word of caution if using a large belt sander
If your binding is celluloid be VERY CAREFUL of overheating the binding and having a torch in your hands
No joke
