Hi folks,
Is the 250 any better for any reason?

Possibly. You never know what you get with these lower end mandos. I'd say play it before you buy if you can. If not, buy from a reputable dealer than knows how to properly setup a mandolin. I think the 250 is all solid wood with pressed top and the 150S has a plywood back and/or sides with a solid pressed top. The tops on these are very thick. The 150S I bought for my nephew is very thin, but it is very playable. Great to learn on.

The 150S is solid wood; the specs on all the Kentucky mandos are here (http://sagamusic.com/catalog/products.asp?CategoryID=2&FamilyID=3&BrandID=20).

Sorry they list the 140s with maple plywood back and sides. They list the 150s with all solids.

I think the 250 looks better. The sunburst is pretty harsh looking on the cheaper kentucky's (though I'm not much of a sunburst person to begin with), but with the wine color I just think it looks like a richer mandolin. FOTW, while having a rough time lately, has a great web page that discusses in great detail the differences between all the mandos -- you can even dowload and play clips from each.

Just to let you know- Greg Boyd (www.gregboyd.com/mando.html) has both of these mandolins for sale at the moment. I would give him a call (406.327.9925) and he'll play 'em both and tell you straight up which one he prefers. No financial interest, he's just a great guy and runs a stand up business. He'll tell you if the 250 is worth the extra $50...
