Can anyone tell me some of the specs on any of his mandolins?
I'm in the process of coming up with specs for a custom made that I will have built soon, and I want to take a look at some of best!
Thanks in advance

David plays a Gibson Lloyd Loar, and he plays his Gilchrist alot in concert. I saw him a while back and got these shots of him and his Gilchrist. JD

He also has a 1925 Fern that has been recorded a great deal. Also has owned (& may still own) several Loars.

Is it the lighting in that photo or has the Dawg turned completely gray?

I saw the Dawg (Grisman BG Exp.) in January in Mill Valley. He's about 80% gray, but he wears his hair fairly long these days which ends up emphasizing the gray (actually whitish) hair.
But his hair doesn't matter a bit. The guy plays like a madman. That night he was playing a Gibson with a flowerpot inlay. I didn't get to ask if it was a Loar. For some reason he keeps a piece of black electrical tape over the Gibson logo. There was a Gilchrist in attendance, as a back up. Imagine having a Gil as a back up. Sheesh! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
My sense of his choice of instruments is that he uses the Gil as his primary axe when doing the Quintet/Jazzy stuff and the Loar as the primary when he does the BG/Trad stuff.
Not me, no sir! I use my Capek Old Era for absolutely EVERY piece I play mandolin on. You won't catch me chosing between a Loar and a Gil! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

So, Physhifee, get thee a copy of Don McRostie's F5 plan or Roger Siminoff's plan and go for greatness. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
