View Full Version : Wiens F5....style Piccolo....
i have been dreaming of this day when the Jamie Wiens Piccolo mandolin would be unveiled....the picture on the cafe homepage looks great....did anyone see it in person or play it? Thanks!
The piccolo looks much different now than when I played it! Very nice work, Jamie! I'd like to see a close up of the Cherub now it's finished. I couldn't believe how powerfull a sound could come out of such a small instrument. I was very impressed. Different playing a smaller neck. When playing as you would in key of G, you would actually be in key of C. That's a little different too.
Also looking forward to hearing for others who played it.

Yup, played it at Wintergrass and loved it. Great workmanship.

played it, and it was tiny (took a couple of minutes of learning curve time to figure it out), but had a killer tone and could be heard ringing over the top when a friend of mine was playing the Weins F-5 with me. Pretty sweet.

I would love to hear this little thing... maybe someone can record it and put it on the web?

I played it and would love to have one kicking around for weird doubling of 'dola parts on recordings...
It kinda sounds like a recording that's been speeded up to 78 RPM...
I have sausages for fingers and I was still able to get around on it OK....
I think there is a market for these in mandolin orchestras...
Very cool instrument....
Hey...did both of Jamie's mandolins have varnish finish w/that sweet french polish he seems to have mastered? And the "real" question....when do we get to see the entire "Wiens family" piccolo,F5,'dola & cello??

The two he brought both had a lacquer finish. He had hoped to complete the French polishing on my F-5 in time to bring it to WG, but the clock ran out.

I played it and it was really something and absolutely adorable with its little abbreviated pick guard. While I was playing it someone said it sounded like a mandolin on helium.

I played it and it's a world class instrument made by a world class builder. Wiens is real stuff. Amazing sound. It was like playing something you'd never experienced. You'd just have to be there and play it. Not sure how to describe that sound but it was good. Liked to see Pete Martin play it. Man, that guy is a rocket on mandolin.
His workmanship is flawless. His F mandolin was a serious big sound. Being up there and seeing all those great builders at WinterGrass makes me think a convention of just mandolin builders with some nice concerts/entertainment should be a future goal of someone's. A mandolin family only WinterGrass. Hmmm. There's a dangerous idea.
Anybody know the string gauges, and for that matter, how's it tuned?
Liked to see Pete Martin play it. Man, that guy is a rocket on mandolin.
I've never actually heard Peter Martin play, but I lived near Seattle for awhile, and before I left, I had the pleasure of taking ONE mandolin lesson from him. #Absolutely THE most informative and useful hour of my time spent on ANY kind of music instruction, EVER.
Peter examined and diagnosed my posture, pick position, timing, tone....man, it was INTENSE! #All in one lesson. #I wish I could have continued with him, but alas, I had to move on. #Any of you folks living in that area are missing something if you haven't at least considered taking lessons from Peter Martin. #He is a wonderfully gifted instructor as well as musician.
